Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Made some progress on my 71 Cheyenne SWB. Shortened the parking brake cable and got it working again. Pulled the wiring front to back and the taillight harness. Built both doors. Installed 1/4 windows and side windows after removing the old window tint with oven cleaner and black trash bag trick. Installed the required longer regulators and longer latch controls for the 72 doors. Hung the fenders, hood hinges and hood.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Put all my parking brake cables back in and realized I’m short one of the pigtail looking cable guides. There was only one when I took it apart and when putting it back together it didn’t look right so I checked on here. Sure enough, another part I’ve now gotta find.

Started putting the front end back together and got the upper and lower a arms installed on the passenger side. When I tried to put the new MOOG spring in it appears something isn’t right. Looks like when the top seats properly the bottom is clocked about 1” past its seating point. Arrrggghhh! I stopped at that point.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Put a coat of primer on the steering wheel I'm restoring. I started the project back in March and little by little its getting closer to paint. Primer reveals I have a little more work to do, but it is a huge difference from what I started with.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Finishing up the cowl firewall area. Just a little block sanding left . Going to paint the dash since the windshield is out. Looking at the dash it appears to be flat or satin saddle fawn on top would that be correct for this year truck ? Vents are a brownish also . Hopefully paint it this week then steam clean and detail the motor and frame. Finally will be able to test fit the clip

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Making progress on the front end. Discussed this with Boog over the weekend. This side fought me the whole way. Bushings were a bear, spring didn't want to clock right, etc. But, I pushed ahead and got it all together, torqued, and greased. Got the upper A arm on the driver's side and working on the bushings/cross shaft in the lower now.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

This past weekend, finished up the assembly of the repainted fenders and new grille. The right fender is a reproduction and definately does not fit as well as the original fender. This project is a refurbishment where the truck will be used as a truck, so not spending so much time making this perfect.

But, started on the hood. First thing was to put the crown back into the center spine...that worked out well. Next was removing old paint. The front corners had cracking paint so investigation turned up lots of body filler over previous damage. Further inspection indicated the curvature of the front corner was wrong. Template is of the other side. Now, I have to improve this rather than 3/8" of body filler. So, time to cut out some metal and weld in new pieces to get closer to the proper shape before reasonable amount of body filler. Ugh!

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Got my new wheel and tire set up all dialed in.

Kept the 15" steel wheels, added some center caps from an early 2000's fullsize and topped off with a set of 2" beauty rings.

I have the work area ready for new exhaust gaskets (manifold and collector sides) to go with the new muffler additions. Ordered the Remflex brand, and will be doing this Saturday. Will post a few pics when done...

Works great still on the first stripping drum . Also have a 60 and 80 grit drums. This truck has been a pleasure to work on no hidden surprises. No rot around either the front or back windows. Found one small dent on the roof

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I found my floor. It was piled with parts when I got it and I never cleaned it out til now. I'm working on the wiring and needed under the dash. Solid floor with only surface rust where the rubber mat wore through.

Started my exhaust gasket project today. Still waiting on the collector gaskets, but the manifold gaskets are installed. Pretty happy with the way they went in.

Here is what I started with when I took them off..

Finished making my patch panels for where the firewall and floor meet. Need to weld these in before pulling the old floor out.
