Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

That is COOL!!

I love stuff like that. That emblem looks factory, and it's gonna throw a lot of people. Putting them on the cowl panels is the perfect spot, too.

Nice design, McMurf!!

Very cool....I like the out of the box thinking and the emblems came out great. I agree with Jay...the Chevelle/Camaro style SS looks better

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

I'm curious, do you know how your buddy made these? Were they cut with a laser or a water jet, 3D prototyping printer, or old school mill and machine work? Custom built factory appearing emblems is just not something I've ever seen before.

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

Gentlemen, I have asked Jay to log in (he is a member of this site) and answer your questions here.
All I can tell you is that he made these in his garage....and what he did to his machine that mills these is pure genius in my honest opinion.

Trust me, it is totally beyond my ability to understand.

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

First I would like to thank McMurphy for allowing me to hijack his thread for a little while.

Second, thank you all for your positive comments and interest in my work.

Now to answer some of your questions… I have a 3 axis (soon to be 5 axis) CNC milling machine that I converted from a manual machine. I also designed a high rpm auxiliary spindle that is mounted to the side for the fine detail work. I do all of my own cad/3d modeling for the things that I produce. I mostly work in aluminum but I can do just about any material. I was born a Chevy guy and my father still is, but I converted in high school because of my first truck... an 83 F-100 (I know it is sinful saying that here) but I think all truck guys are alike in some way regardless of brand. My semi-restoration can be seen here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/382289...50-regular-cab

If you are interested in creating an emblem of your own or just have question my contact info is as follows;

Email-Info@precisioncncworks.com

Facebook page-https://www.facebook.com/#!/PrecisionCNCWorks

Or a simple PM will work too.

Thank you all,
Jay

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

Thanks for the feedback/answers and providing your contact info. My son is a machinist and has created many of the parts on my truck, but those emblems are in a league of their own!

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

Ok you all posted too many replies for me to respond to !!
All I can say is thank you for all the compliments, which I truely have to share with Jay, as it was only my idea but his talents that made those as nice as they are.

Back a few pages I started talking about the face of my truck, and I started with the grill mods, and talked lightly about the hide aways, well it is time to address those now we are past the emblems mini-hijack.

I started with 69 Mercury Cougar light boxes as they were low profile, and cheap on Ebay.

As you can see in these next 3 pics, I had planned on using as much of them as possible with heavy modifications done to them. I was hoping to keep them as modular as possible to cut down on any shade tree engineering.

Sadly I came to realize that in order to keep the integrity of the CHEVROLET letters that I wanted to light up, I was not going to be able to use those 15" wide doors and light boxes.

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

As I have already shown, I needed a consistant platform to work with to get these lights right, and the center section of the grill support as it comes stock is not a level and easy surface to work with, so out it came and in went my version.

I was attempting to be clever about cutting the sheet metal, and keeping it all as one piece as possible, but as I learned later the backward sweep of the doors would require the headlights themselves to ride much further forward than I had anticipated.

Here you can see the Cougar doors, now shortened by 5" resting in place as I am getting my mind wrapped around this.

And the p-side door section of the grill also resting in place.

This was a very slow and careful process for me on this aspect of the project as it turned out to not be easy for me to accomplish.
By the time of this photo I was already one month into this particular modification......

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

Ok the next step of progress that I guess was photo worthy, but about two weeks later, was marrying up the doors with their sections of grill.
Name: 02nov13 p-side hideaway (1).jpg

Size: 41.7 KB
Name: 02nov13 p-side hideaway (3).jpg
Views: 679

This was a lot of check and double check to ensure I would have the doors and grill sections positioned correctly because it would not be cool to find out I couldn't pull this off...
Name: 02nov13 p-side hideaway (4).jpg
Views: 682
Size: 42.0 KB

Then two more weeks after that, this was what the face looked like with my reverse engineered light boxes and the Cougar hardware, though minus the Honda Prelude actuators.
This is just before I started shooting paint....
Name: 19nov13 face prep for paint.jpg
Views: 680

Which brings us up to the 19th of November...
