thanks again for all the comments guys! Bob, i like your cab stand... we were thinking about welding some bent tubing like this ( to the back so we could easily flip the cab over... but i have to finish stripping the cab and the painter is coming friday to pick her up.

here's a few pic's of the finished firewall. and my body mount kit FINALLY made it so i got the core support mounted

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

test fit the radiator and it is a thing of beauty... my neighbor welded on 1" spacers on the bottom and the factory rubber mounts fit perfectly on them along with the factory radiator cover! my new rubbers will be here today so i just need to get some fancy stainless allen head bolts for the top of the core support and new bolts for everything else.

thanks Brandon. there were 2 that seemed to be cross threaded from the factory and the new bolts i got didnt have that tapered tip so getting them started with the new paint was a rough way to goalong with retapping them.

thanks man... the headers are from street & performance. they fit great with the exception of having to grind off the driverside ear on the 80e. i love them so far. well worth the $600

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

haha yea mine are all changed out to standard bolts to without the tapered end couldn't find any like that. What i did is after i painted the core support i re-taped all the holes and put new j clips on everything that took them. Looks good though man if the weather clears up this week maybe ill go by and check it all out

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

You can always grind a point onto the tip of the bolt. Just thread a nut onto it past where you want the taper to stop first. After you grind the taper into it threading the nut off will clean up the threads so it works right without having to mess around with running it through a threading die.

Looks great! You could try a thread chaser to clean up the paint in the threads before putting your bolts in. I know its more work but it helps getting them started.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

Looks great, keep it up.

When I painted aircraft parts that had captive fasteners we always put a fastener in the hole with just enough threaded in to engage all the threads of the captive fastener. This way you could get paint all the way up to the threaded area on the panel since the head of the fastener was not touching the panel surface.

We also put a tapered rubber plug in a tight tolerance fit areas (like hinge pin areas) to keep the paint out.

Pull the fasteners / plugs out before the paint flashes over so you don't peel away any paint.
