Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
It took about 10 hours just to cut out the rust and weld in new tin.
I am putting on Por15 and seam sealing both sides and that should stop the rust. Actually once I got going I didn't want to stop!!!!

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
Rear cab support is done on passenger side and rear floor peice is installed. Just need the cab corner welded in now.
I should also look for a new jack to install in the above picture now that there is actually a place for it instead of a great big rust hole.

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
Just a reminder of what was rusted in the corner
This now has new cab support underneath then a rear floor section welded in. Then I cut out a nice area aroung the rust, then I placed new cab corner over top and traced and then cut a little bigger than needed, set back on and kept trimming till it was just right and spot welded in. I am glad I did it. I was going to hire it for fear I would make a mess out of it but It turned out good, and probably saved about $500. Now just the drivers side left.

Dude, nice work. Seems like your not scared to get in and get it done. Its interesting to see that you are from Canada. I am From British Columbia.
I also have a little warpage on my bed. Its in the front. I am also having to find like half a bedside so that i can get rid of a big pile of bondo. Good to see someone else that has cut theirs down too. Keep up the good work.

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
Thanks its coming together finally, once I get this rust cut out and replaced. Then the rest is easy, I'll start putting the cab back together, and it will be drivable again. I then plan on gettting it ready then for paint, it will just keep looking better now, instead of tearing it down which seems like your going backwards.
Here I rebuilt both door pillar bottoms, and when the paint drys I will be ready to install the rocker panels and floor.

Re: 1971 GMC lwb to 1968 chev swb project
I welded in the rocker panel, part of the floor and cab support. Enjoy the pictures hopefully they help someone else tackling this project. I also painted Por 15 on the inside of the cab support where it was welded and inside the existing cab support to stop rust.
Next I hope to cut and weld in the big floor piece, hopefully it gets sized and cut better. If you look close enough on the floor piece where seat goes it was cut too small and I had to weld an extra thin piece in.

Floor wire brushed and ready for POR 15 rust sealant.
It took about 1/2 quart to do floor.
