Re: Jesses' 48 PU

Hello everyone, its been a long time since I work on my truck or post pics. I was promoted at work and I travel a lot now, so I have very little time to work on it. The last few weekends I have dedicated them to the brake lines. I finally finished them yesterday and here it is. This is the first time I run brake lines, I am sure it has been done better but I think they turned out okay. I used brake lines I bought at my local NAPA store. They are metal covered with a green anti corrosion paint, so they are hard to see with black chassis.

Wow Jesse, thought you fell off the edge of the world!

Nice update, keep it going Bud just a bit at a time (like I should talk). What did you finally decide to do with the engine?

Don't forget to post an updated photo of your little friend; he's what? About 19 now?! Lol

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

Hey Dan, well it felt like I fell off the side of the earth, a lot has happened in the last year or so. Mainly good stuff, but kept me very busy and it seemed as if the truck slid to the back burner. But well, I am going to work on it every chance I get.
No, my little buddy is not 19, he is 7 and he keeps me busy. Baseball, school, Wii, PS3 etc.... the kid just wont run out of energy!
As far as the engine, well have not made up my mind, I regret getting rid of the LS1, I got a great deal on it and well to be honest, I want to go with a LS1 or LS2. The 454 my brother in law has will require too much. I can get a complete LS1/2 for about 2k, to think that I already had one! Below is my little buddy... I swear the kid is coolest, at the pace I am going, he will be driving the truck when he goes to high school!

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

I am no where near the point where i need the engine. But i am always looking in Craigslist or Offerup app for that special deal. Well today i scored what i think is a good deal on a LS2 6.0 engine. It was pulled from a 2002 Escalade with 98k miles. He wanted 1500.00 for the engine trans computer and hareness, but because the tranny is set for 4wheel drive my buddy said we can use a 700r instead. Long story short, i paid 850.00 for the engine, wire harness and computer. I feel its a good deal.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

That is a smoking deal on a 6.0!! If it is out of an escalade, it should be a LQ9 engine - rated by GM at about 360 HP. I have one in a 1966 GTO and it is a great engine. Looking forward to seeing you get this in the truck.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

Good looking boys you guys have. EXCELLENT that you've got them involved with their dads on well, almost anything. As long as they're with you they're talking to you and that's always a good thing!

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

RICOTT, what transmission do you have in your car with the LQ9?
I am getting conflicting info on what trans I should run. I have a 4L60 in my garage from an earlier deal, I am being told I will burn it out quick if I use it/.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

I have a T56 six speed out of a 2000 Camaro behind the 6.0 that is in the GTO. I can tell you that the 2002 Camaro ran a 4l60e and that engine (LS1/6) was rated by GM at 330HP. The corvette of the same vintage also used a modified 4l60e (bolted to the transaxle) and in 2002 it was rated at 405 HP.

I can tell you the 4l60 will work fine, but if you beat on it (drag race it), you probably will wind up having to rebuild it. I can also say that I have had even less luck beating on a 700r in a corvette I had. For ease of wiring and operation, I would go with the 4l60e. I am currently using this combo (LS1/4L60e) in a 58 vette we are restomoding.

Good luck with your project!

Ricky

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

Was able to work on my truck for a bit, I mounted the fuel tank. I used some 1/8 inch thick 1" square tubing Left over from a fence project from a while back and some 1/8 inch thick 1" flat stock I also had in my scrap pile. The flat stock was to thin and it flexed a bit when I mocked it up so I welded a piece on to at 90 degrees in the center to give it some support. It worked just fine.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

Hello world, it's been a few weeks. I've been working on my truck on and off, making a little progress at a time. I started working on the cab. After taking a closer look at the floor, I realized it was rusted through pretty bad in some areas, so I decided to replace it. The front floor pans are new, my dad had replaced them for me already so it's just the back part I need. Once I cut it off, I fixed the inner corners by making some patches and welding them solid. I used 1/8" thick 1" square tubing to weld in a frame for my new floor panels. I need to grind my welds, weld in my floor and flip the cab over to weld the bottom side. I plugged a few holes on the firewall. I didn't bother counting them, but I am sure my neighbors hate me by now with my grinder going non stop for an entire day.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

Guys I have a concern and a question. On my truck I don't have the rear cab mounts that I see on others, when I took it apart I clearly remember only having to unbolt the cab from the two front corners and the center of the rear. I have looked at all of my pics over and over and it doesn't have the rear corner mounts or supports. (as shown on the pictures below from other projects i've seen in here) is this normal? did all trucks not have these supports, should I be concerned about it? Any information will help.
thanks.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU

'47-'48 had center mount rear. So only 3 mounts.
Changed to 4 in '49
