Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

I reckon this belongs in the Blazer project section now...
Well, I've spent a pile of hours on this in the last while, fitted, apart, painted, together(ish), driven incomplete, ditched/swamped to avoid wildlife on the highway, lowered/raised/lowered again. Here's some pics!

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

Alright...guess we're pretty much up to date; interior=front and rear seats recovered (sorry, I cut the rear seat back down 2 3/4 inches so it's level with the fronts...), rear side panels fabbed out of 1/4 plywood/fiberglass speaker pods and covered in grey leather to match door/kick panels/visors, head liner fabbed and covered in same cloth as seat inserts/door panel inserts, top painted same grey as dash/doors etc., stereo is console fitted. I've taken it to a few show/shines and local cruise-ins and have yet to park within MILES of another first-gen 2WD Blazer. It's got about 400 miles on it(+/-); I think I like it!

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

I have been watching your build, nice to see a 2wd Blazer, up in the North here pretty much all is 4wd. The truck sits really nice with the drop and the orange makes me rethink the copper I was going to repaint my 71. What brand of paint is it.

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

It's Sikkens solvent based base/clear, it's a "tri-coat" lambo color. I think now that the ride height is settled on I need to put a small c-notch in the rear; only about 2 inches clearance and it's hit bottum more than a few times already.

I dunno..., not much to say really; sanded it FOREVER with 80 grit on a d/a sander, primed it a couple coats, 180 then 320 on a sander again, sealed it, painted it a solid white, couple coats of a mixture of blue, green, white pearl with a splash of coarse metalic thrown in for good measure, then a couple coats of clear. I'm gonna re-pearl/clear it this winter; not enough effect for me.

Of course this was all done after many hours of fiberglass repairs; drip rails damaged, cracked seams, cartwheeling off of the G-D saw horses in a wicked winter wind storm, oh yeah, and a freakin rv roof vent above the back seat!

Inside I just rubbed the jeebuz out of it with red scotch brite pads, retextured it with auto rock gaurd then painted it met grey to match the int. Made a headliner out of 1/4" plywood, had it covered and used 3/8 long screws to attach around the perimeter. I'll try to get some light in there for a better picture; dark paint and limo tinted windows makes it too dim for pics inside, but quite a cozy feel.

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

Just went through your build...looks AWESOME!

Can you give a little more details about the rear panels? I get the base of 1/4" plywood, but I saw you had some contours/shapes built in as well. For this do you just cut more plywood and stick it on and then wrap after, or is it done as a different process?

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

Ummm...interior panels; a local upholstery dude owes me for work I did for him, so I took my panels cut from 1/4" plywood with 'glass speaker doodads and he covered them(poorly!) in grey vinyl(that's lifting!). The raised center is just a layer of thin foam glued down. I have color matched screws I'll use after I take them to someone ELSE to be re-glued around the speakers.

Someone asked about the top inside, I think..., 1/8"(?) mobil home wall board covered and installed headliner with 3/16 long screws around the perimeter and 1/2" down the center.

Nice door eh? Wasn't super stoked with the paint first time, so the country wildlife gave me reason to try again. Stay tooned.

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

I pushed most of the damage out and drove it most of it's miles so far like that. An animal came across the secondary highway I travel most everyday, I locked up the brakes, the rear came around and I came to rest in a swamp filled ditch.

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

Thanks, the cloth looks way lighter in pictures than the color actually is, I still need to make a t-gate panel and have it covered as well as repair the side panels. I have speaker'd kick panels that we won't discuss how bad they are, now that they're glued up to jeebuz not sure what to do when the vynil's removed; don't want to melt them removing the glue.

I'm looking forward to a full season's drivin this year; 3-hills, Radium, Stooper Run etc.

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

Thanks for the info on the panels! I've collected the chrome retaining strip, risers/lower mounts and vinyl over the past year, so now I just need to get the 6x9's, a couple lights (I want them to turn on like the courtesy lights) and some hardboard.

I see you have screws just through the panels to hold them in...do you think there's any way to not have to do that? I was thinking of drilling the hole in the riser a little bigger and using those snap in types like new cars use this way I can hide them behind the vinyl. Do you think that'd work?

Re: Latest Obsession; 1972 2WD Blazer.

By hardboard do you mean a heavy cardboard? Not any room in the chrome retainers for more than 1/8" or so before vinyl. If you are making "factory" style panels, I think using clips between the board and vinyl to anchor it will show through the vinyl in short time, it'd also be difficult to remove later-maybe not...
I used screws for simplicity and have grey apholstery screws I'll use after the panels are repaired.
I think you'll need to consider speaker support in making your panels; a heavy cardboard may not hold 'em for long
