Oh and I also scored a pair of front seats from an Audi for exactly the right price ZERO £ and ZERO P. Exactly my price

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Good progress so far Bill. All those parts should take up a weekend or two.

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Got the axles out the trailer last night

The rear is about 3" overall longer, mostly due to the bigger brakes (the one that was fitted is also a 12 bolt but obviously from a different year)

The front I will hopefully start stripping tonight/at the weekend. Nice big set of disc's on it for lots of stopping power

These are the seats I picked up. Not in great condition but Id be recovering them anyway and for £0.00, Im not complaining

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

After humphing those bloody heavy axles all over last night it was getting late so I decided all I could make a start at was drilling out the spot welds holding the dash in place.

Not the easiest spot welds Ive had to drill out. They are less a "spot" and more like some kind of weird "smile" meaning I have to chain drill them out. Plus some are so close to the edge I thing I will have to try and cut through them with a cutting disk

But It is starting to separate, I will just have a little extra welding to do when I put it all back together

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

I think the same guy did the spot welds on my truck

Nice score on the axles, you should be able to get around the additional length of the rear axle by playing with the wheel off-sets

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Well I got all the spotwelds drilled out and all the various attachments removed and the bolts in the corners out but Im buggered if that dash will come out. Its just holding in at the corners.

Gave up 5 minutes ago and decide its time for a beer! I'll get back to it on Saturday.

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Made some good progress today, though the intermittent rain was a pain.

Got the new front clip stripped. Stripped it till I was left with just the cross member which I finally got bolted to the frame.

Only 2 holes lined up where they should and unfortunately it looks like this was already bolted to a different truck as the frame had already been altered so it wasn't much use to make a template from. But Im comfortable its in the right position based on the fact the 2 holes for the upper control arms line up.

I also got the dash out. Not as easy as it would seem but its out (I'll do a separate write up later on how I did it and the problem I came across)

Found this inside the door frame. How it got there is anyone's guess.

Got my work cut out fixing this. If the weather is bad tomorrow, I'll make a start. If its good I'll continue on the front clip. Though if today is anything to go by we will have at least 3 seasons in the day and none of them summer!!!!

BTW the butchered lip round the window frame will be easily fixed (Will explain that later as well)

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Went ahead and fitted the rest of the front suspension today. Realised that I needed to fit it all in order to get the correct position for
the shock mounts and the fixed portion of the steering gear.

BTW did I ever post a picture of the PO's mods to the instruments? Here they are!

Cheers Pete. It was a lot easier to do than I'd expected but it did take time.

I'll PM you again re the old front clip.

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Well I got the rest of the steering system mounted to the frame and the shocker mounts moved today. Happy with the weekends work, though without the excellent info on this thread I think it would have taken a whole lot longer:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=366828

I was going to make a start repairing the dash centre but to be honest I thought a beer was a better option than trying to tackle this!

Maybe tomorrow night!

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

It may still come to that, but I have a patch panel here so I will give it a go.

Of course the difficulty will be getting one all the way over here.

I have no idea what the PO was trying to achieve, but yes some serious hackery!

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Just a bit!

Are they readily available in the US? If Im right this style was only made between 60 and 62 so there can be many available nearly 60 years on.

I'll see how I get on tonight. The first cut, as they say, will be the hardest!

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

While I remember, have any of you chaps this side of the world any use for a fibre glass induction hood for a early 60's truck? Personally I think its beyond repair as the strengthening section at the hinge edge has de-laminated and was held together with a length of wood and a shelving bracket. But before I cut it up and scrap it I though Id ask, just in case.

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

OK, so to recap, this is what a PO had left me with

Got to be honest I wasn’t looking forward to this as it took me long enough to figure out how I was going to do it.

Anyway I measured up the dash and the repair panel turned out to be about 20mm – 25mm to wide, so I marked it up and trimmed it

Then it was out with the old

BTW this was some earth connection!

Its about 3" long. Think it was doubling up for a local substations main earth!

Anyway with the old bit cut out it was a case of offering up the new section and just altering the gap bit by bit while keeping the overall width at the bottom.

Unfortunately the patch panel is not an exact fit (there a surprise) ant is slightly shallower on the bottom but that’s not really and issue as nobody will see it.

The top needed some trimming. Again about 25mm.

Final cutting done (left the wee “lugs” at the bottom just to locate the patch panel though I joggled them slightly

Clamped in place

Then tacked up

There was a bit of a gap on one side at the bottom

But that was filled with a bit of offcut

Although I did tack weld most of the outside I fully welded it up internally

Still needs a lot of filler, sorry bondo, but in my opinion at least its already 100x better than it was.

Oh and I found this in the glove box

Does that mean this truck was on the road possibly as late as December 2013 or do you have to have this even if the vehicle is off the road?

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Oh and has anyone got a picture of the inside of their glove box (for a 62) so I can see what it should look like. Im not sure if there has been some butchery in there as well. The actual plastic insert had been cut up but Im not sure if the steel has been cut as well.

Just off on a road trip to pick up an old motorbike 150 miles from here with a friend and then home via another detour.
Been spending a lot of time on other people's jobs lately, but hats all good.

You are progressing well.

My radio hole has to be cut and removed too, in my case someone used an angry Badger to cut the holes for radio, cab mounted speakers and in the doors.

Some real idiots out there.

Sadly they breed........

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

Ive got the same Rian, huge holes in the doors for speakers.

Ive virtualy no way to repair them because of the swage lines so I may have to cut out and replace quite a large area of the door with flat steel.

Re: The Super Duper Haggis Hauler

If you can not find some old wrecked doors to cut the pieces out of (probably not an option) Maybe find a person or shop that has a bead roller and roll a bead to match the door bead.. Don't know if it would roll a bead that wide though.

I actually managed to "buy" and ship the inner panel off one of Ta2Dons throw away doors.

I will be cutting and welding in one of them into my original drivers door as I have a replacement passenger door that is intact.

The other one went with my original passenger door to its new owner.

This may be a good option too.
