That sucks about the trans, but I really like your truck. Hope you can get this issue worked out soon

Re: 87' 4x4
Well my 700r4 was definitely fried. Started calling for prices to get it rebuilt and was getting quotes in the neighborhood of $1,800.
A friend of mine had a TH400 mated to a NP208 that came out of K30 military truck that I could have for free. We had no idea if it was good or not. The fluid looked good so I decided what the hell, I might as well try it before spending a bunch of money. Well we dropped it in today and it works and shifts great! For those who may be wondering: the drive shafts worked with the TH400, diesel torque converter works fine, cooling lines mated up fine, and the gas flex plate bolted up to the diesel converter. These are issues I had questions about before we started. Also, I got some use out of my front tow hooks. |

Well Glenlee, either way diesel or not, a nice looking ride for sure. Cruise all day in that.

Re: 87' 4x4
Not too much new to add, but I did put in a factory clock and a three speed shift indicator since I no longer have overdrive. Also, I copied what others on here have done and put LED's in place of the dash light bulbs. That makes a huge difference! I could barely see the gauges at night before. Here is a pic:

Re: 87' 4x4
Dash lights look great! Doesn't that make a heck of a difference? That's a bummer about your transmission, but great you got up and running again with little $$$ spent. I like the mirror, may have to snag that idea on a future project...

Re: 87' 4x4
Niiiiiice! I'll be curious to hear how you like the vintage air system. I've been looking at their stuff for potential A/C in my crew cab.

Re: 87' 4x4
Looks great! Was your truck a non-A/C truck before? Looks like factory air vents? <'83 style wiper switch too? How are you liking the 3-speed? Inserts look awesome. You are motivating me.
PS I don't see anything wrong with your fancy air cleaner.

The Vintage Air kit comes with flexible hose with adapters to connect to the factory vents. The kit replaces all of the duct work except for about 10 inches attached to the driver's side vent. The TH400 is working good. I miss the overdrive a little on the highway, but I feel like this will be more reliable. I have blown up several 700r4's over the years. I guess me and 700r4's just don't get along. Looking forward to seeing some more pics of your crew cab. |

Re: 87' 4x4
Thanks 355bullet. Yep, it's got the stock suspension.
I stayed pretty conservative with the tires and went with 31's. From what I have read on here 33's will fit with no lift. It has 3.42 gears and I was afraid with 33's it might hunt in and out of overdrive. Now that I am running the three speed I kind of wish I had 33's. |

Re: 87' 4x4
You have a great looking truck Greenlee! Just read your thread and where yours started is about where mine is now. Nice to see the finishing up phase on yours. What is left on your list?
