Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

one of my first mig welds

We have gotten alot done since my last post, we got the cab off, the rear x member off, the front xmember off, we cut a buncha little mounts that were riveted to the frame, and have decided to raise the front x member 1.5 inches into the frame, drop spindles, drop springs in the front. in the rear i am gonna do a flip kit and maybe take a leaf out. i really want a sport bumper in the rear but if i can't find 1 for a good price then a roll pan is goin on. i can't decide between american eagle 225s or ridler 695s in grey, both in 20x8.5 in front and 20x10 in rear, big brakes all the way around, red paint, now i'm gettin ahead of myself. once we cut the c notch and raise the front xmember its gettin sandblasted and painted.

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

You can find a NOS GM sport bumper at www.classicparts.com. I bought one from them and have been very pleased with it. Even came in an original GM stickered box! How much total drop are you looking to get? Can't wait to see your truck come together more!

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

We started the notching of the front frame to raise the crossmember 1.5".

There is every thing marked out. We are going to remove the section between the upper and lower tape lines.

All cut out...

That's me cutting the 1.5" wide piece from the section we took out.

We cleaned up the cuts and put a bevel on both sides for the weld. We had to stop here since I have to go to a student council meeting this afternoon. I might get to work on it more after the meeting since we do not have school tomorrow.

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

Korbin has been taking a metal shop class at school. I set up the heat and wire speed for him and walked him thru where to weld. He did all the welding once I had the parts tacked into place. His welding is really good for such a youngster only doing stick welding for about 4 weeks. Looks like he might make a good fabricator some day.

We made good progess this weekend and hope to finish the front section this week. Then on to the back.

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

I looked at the bumper link. That is the wrong year model for you.

You need: 1981-87) * Bumper-Rear-Chrome-Fleetside/Suburban/Blazer
Product : 65-072RC

It's much easier to fabricate when you have 10 fingers to work with. Get some leather/cowhide work gloves on when you're working w/sharp tools (esp cut off wheels). This was after it cut through my leather glove. No glove on & I would have cut my thumb off....

Be careful Korbin. A cool truck is not worth getting hurt for. You've made a lot of progress this weekend, but slow down some and stay safe.

Thanks SCOTI, and mr. kilgore, we are stayin safe, it took us a while for us to do all of that. Actually, dad cut himself when he picked up a peice of sharp metal, then about 10 min later, i did the same exact thing, neither of em were bad enough for stitches, but still a reminder.

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

I aggree with Scoti and Mr Kilgore. I should not have let Korbin do that without gloves. I personally do not like wearing gloves when using rotating tools, but the cut off wheel is an exception. The other major thing that was wrong with the grinder set up is the lack of the guard around half the wheel. We were using the only wheel I had left which was a little larger in diameter. I stocked up on more of the correct wheels now for when we get to the rear.

Tonight we plan to weld in the plates to finish boxing in the notch area and grinding the outside of the frame smooth. He will have to have his chores and room clean before we start...

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

That truck is going to be awesome! It's cool when a kid builds his own truck and have it when he starts driving. It will be a nice truck when it's done. Looking forward to seeing it all done

I wanted to build my own Chevy k10 so bad when I was younger and have it to drive when i got my license, but I couldn't find a good enough deal!!!

Great project!

I used 4wd leaf springs along with perches I made to flip the axle for some extra drop.

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

The 4wd leafs have less arch than the 2wds do so they give you some extra drop, maybe 2-3 more inches. There is a picture of the springs sitting on top of each other in my build thread.
