Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

I finally got the step notch done and everything is welded back in. I also had to narrow the rear suspension 2.5". I had the half shafts narrowed. Just waiting for the tie rod ends to be finished and the lower control arms. Then hopefully we can get the suspension back together and then install some air bags.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

We also realized that we would have to notch the cross-member in front of the rear suspension in order to install the drive shaft.

Finally getting the suspension back together made a little progress the other day.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

I went today and it's finally all together. We have to shorten the 4 link bars a little bit the get the suspension lined up. Other than that we're getting ready to set the ride height and get the air bags on.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm definitely glad to see some progress on my truck. This project feels like it's been going forever. ( It's been 4 1/2 years) I guess maybe that is forever.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

I finally have the wheels on the truck. The rear needs to be adjusted a little bit and then it will be ready to get the mounts welded on for the air bags. Basically where it's sitting now is the ride height. The low height will be almost 3 inches lower and I should be able to go up about 2 inches. I should have plenty of travel. I should have it rolling around next week.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

murd969, great, pics, ideas and build. If this question is in previous posts I'm sorry, what is the advantage to lengthening from stock the link rods. Thanks in advance NC

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

We did it longer to help get a better ride and to limit the pinion angle when there's suspension travel.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

If you were to guess what is your estimate of degrees of adjustment to pinion angle that you gain by lengthening the links. Considering that the differential is fixed what are you going to set your pinion angle. FYI I'm a few months before I start on a 57 GMC 100 with 96 C-4 both front and rear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Could I PM you about setting up how to put pictures in this forum? Thanks in advance NC

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

I have more progress done on the truck. The suspension is done other than minor clean up and other small things but it's officially a 100% roller with the air bags.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

Here's some closer pics of how we did the lower rear bag mount. A lot of people use the shock mount but we weren't comfortable using it. We added a bar below the lower 4 link bar and put the bracket there. I get plenty of lift now that we did the bags like this.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

Do you get full travel of the rear shock rods with them at that angle? I would think they would push against one another, you may wear out bags and seals quicker with them that way.

Re: 1956 Chevy 3100 Corvette Suspension

Because of where we have them positioned in the 4 link I actually get about 8 inches of travel. As far as having them angled who knows about how they would wear down. I've seen them set up angled and straight so in not sure what effects having them angled will have. I guess I will find out. Lol.
