Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
The frame rails are cleaned up and primed and undercoated. I put the springs from a 71 long bed C-10 just to see where it will sit when the tires go on and if I will get dropped springs later. Truck had 255/60/15 rear and 215/70/15 fronts. I am putting 235 /60/15 on all four . the rims are 8.5" wide and the old fronts did not fit right on that wide of rim. Power steering will turn them easier.Installed a new electric fuel pump and filters with new 3/8" aluminum fuel lines from tank to carb.
The tank as installed and the frame has been slightly modified to fit. the filler neck will turn out over the frame rails

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
the tank is advertised as 17 gallon , fits pretty well and does not hang down very far. I had the aluminum angle for the brackets welded on locally. I cut out the AN-8 fittings and made some tapped aluminum blocks with MIP thread that welded inside the tank and so I could use fighter radius fittings. The AN -8 90* would not clear the bottom of the bed.I moved the pick-up tube to the passenger side of the tank. Thought if you ran out of gas and pulled off the road the gas would run to that side .
I welded heavy 4" channel across the back of the frame and braced it well . If you get rear ended I wanted some strength around that tank. Still better there than in the cab! I welded angle tabs out for the bed mounts. the original mount holes are now in-accessible. the bottom of the bed rail has holes for outside the frame anyway. ran all new electrical wiring for lights and tank sender added a spare wire for future back up lights and maybe a trailer plug. ran a frame ground too Now I can build the filler neck and turn it out over the frame rail. and to a fill door cut in the side of the bed like Alan is doing in his thread

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Wire wheeled it until it shined- wiped with thinner . sprayed red oxide primer then covered with rustoleum undercoating spray.
It should last another 40 years

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Yes the undercoating is very rubberized and sticks to anything in it's way. The overspray went on my jeans and will not wash out.
Rustoleum undercoating spray from auto zone Was about $7 a can. I am pleased the way it stuck. Had to scrape a section off where the new bed mounts needed to weld on and it was well adhered . The red oxide primer was from a industrial distributor. nothing fancy

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
It is a driver again !!!!
I put in the HEI, bolted on the old Rochester B and Darn --it would not start with out starting fluid nor would it stay running . Tried a different monojet . would not idle- just off idle and rpm. Would not start when hot.Tried a rochester 2 jet - again lots of rpm, no idle. then the float stuck and I had a flood of gas down the intake. Had to quit for the night and dry things up. Borrowed a different rochester 2 jet and again no luck idling finally tried a monojet leftover from my 71 , just bolted it on after at least four years of sitting and it starts and runs- not real smooth but starts good hot and cold and it no flat spots in acceleration. I did find early on that the HEI likes around 10 degrees advance instead of 0-4 as with the points. I did not want to put gas in the new tank until I am finished welding back in that area. We just strapped the gas can to a board bolted quickly to the frame. Still LOTS of stuff to do but it sure felt great to drive it again after 11 months . I need to finish the gas tank filler neck before the bed can go back on. Then aligned and licensed and tags whoops still need speedometer and gauges and seat belts and wiring ... on and on .........................................

Sweet ride. Good to see you driving. Who needs a bed anyway. I like the gas can idea. Gotta love it when gas just gushes down the intake.

Did the Mothers Day cruise with the 64 truck and my 69 Chevelle
My friend won again with his blue 61 Pontiac Ventura Bubbletop. It always beats my Chevelle. Best in show for "Under Construction"

I have asked the moderators to rename this thread " Bubbas Recycle project" and move it to the 60-66 builds and projects section .

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Dave- I cheated and made it a trailer queen for a day. I hid the flatbed around the corner of a building out of sight and drove it the last little bit into view. I do not have current stickers for it yet and with no bed, lights tags ... It was not worth the risk of getting the sheriff all exited.
I had a heck of a time getting it up the ramps on the flatbed. No weight and no bed it just spun the tires. I finally backed it on with two friends pushing. the ramps had a little traction but when the rears hit the boards on the beavertail they just spun and slipped sideways . Kinda got a little close to falling off.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
It is good to be renamed and here in the build section.
I decided to rename it "Bubbas Recycling Project' as I have scrounged parts off 22 different vehicles now as I rebuild this truck. I bought a year pass to Jalopy Jungle, the local pick-a-part, and I am going to use it as much as possible. Back to work after the Show and Shine- I need to finish the gas tank filler.

You need to find me a gas door. I'm still lookin. Motorfest is coming up fast. You need to get your truck done and enter it.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
I took a filler neck off F*@d truck as a trial run. It is the old style with no door , just a exposed chrome cap.
It will just need a hole in the side of the bed about 2.5"". It is not permanent but will be quicker for now. When my body work/ bondo skills return I will tackle the hinged filler door. The exposed gas cap and will be in the same location as the future filler door so I am not screwing any thing up permanently. The hole will trim out when the filler door section gets cut in.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
I have one of those on my 1/2 a truck tailer. I laying in bed one night and got all excited because I thought it might have had a door on it. Had to get up and go look. I was disapointed just a ugly cap. My wife drives a ford ranger. I'm starting to think one in the bed is a lot cleaner look.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Spent the day making a list and getting a new plan after reaching our goal of the Mothers day show.
Pulled the carpet back to remove the old gas tank sender wire and faced what I kinda knew was there. Ordered new 3 point retractable shoulder/seat belts from LMC truck. Pulled out more bootleg wiring under the dash. Found the leaking heater core and the bound up/burned out heater motor.. Need a new heater switch .. things quit working when it gets wiggled Hey the wipers still work but I need the passenger side wiper arm. Gonna need a new windshield and door rubbers so the floor won't rust out again after I get it repaired. Pulled out the old lap seat belts and found still more change money under the seat. Decided I might as well just do the dash panel insert now and put in new round gauges -Maybe Phantom II or Arctic White (auto-meter) Headlight switch quits when you wiggle the stem.. Better order a new one of those too. choke cable is broken ......... It was the start of long and expensive list... Still a good day

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Spring in Idaho --I guess winter has one last blast left in her.. It snowed again last night in the mountains . Rained all night down in the valley-- sure got my Alfalfa field irrigated. Rained 1.41" in 24 hours. That' s a lot for this country.
Found a LOT of leaks in my truck.. The carpet is soaked!!!

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Nice makes me want to go sledding. Why don't you just park that poor old truck in your garage? Better add some patch panels to that list.

Re: Bubba's recycling project
Out came the heater box and the leaking heater core . I ordered a new blower motor and started in on cleaning up the heater box.
I wish there was a better heater that recirculated cab air and actually heated the truck! And fit in the cab and had AC all for a reasonable price!! Maybe when I win the lotto I will put in AC.
