Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

While that guy has the frame doing the suspension work I will be working on getting the engine and differential all degreased, cleaned, and painted. No fun and pretty tedious, but it will be nice to have that done.

I sure hope it does. It seems a good bit thicker than normal paint, so I am hoping it is more chip resistant.

It is a sprayed on product. I am not sure where the shop got it from. I can ask the next time I'm in there.

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

Today I dropped off the rolling chassis to the guy who will be replacing all of the suspension bushings. In the interest of time I may also have him install the pre-bent brake and fuel lines that I bought. That way I can just drop in the drivetrain and put the body on in time for the snow. I'm really hoping the snow holds off for another 6-8 weeks, but you never know around these parts.

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

Got this grainy cell phone pic from the guy doing my body work. This one is significant because it shows he has successfully installed the passengerside fuel filler door that I got from Old Rusty C10. Thanks Bob!

Cletus will now be a dual tank truck!

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

Funny - I installed this motor less than a year ago. I had no idea then that I would be pulling the truck totally apart for a restoration project. This engine runs fantastic (especially considering I bought it for $200) off of Craigs List. My only complaint is the carb needs rebuilt. I found an add on ebay where a guy is offering to rebuild your Q-Jet for $150 so I think I will give that a shot. I called NAPA today and asked what they would charge for a new remaned Q-Jet $1,000!!!!! Are they nuts???

Anyway...I got the transfer case almost fully detailed up today (didn't snap a pic yet) and got the engine stripped down and started the degreasing process.

I must say I am scared to death at the thought of how to get all those vacuum lines back on the right way!

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

I did a little looking and asking around on the q-jet rebuild. Anyone I asked didn't even want to talk about it. I'll let you know how the ebay guy works out.

Watch this video: http://www.spike.com/full-episode/qu...-rebuild/33035
There are some videos on Youtube that are probably more detailed too.

Would love to....however I have 2 full time jobs, and I have to have this thing done before the snow flies as it is my plow truck. I've been forced to pick and choose what to do myself and what to farm out.

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

Finally got my blasting cabinet up and running....Look at the difference it makes on nasty old exhaust manifolds! Nothing like a good media blast and fresh hi temp paint to bring it back to life!

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

There ya go! I have discovered an issue with it though. I wonder if anyone has any ideas on it. It keeps getting clogged somehow and I'm having a moisture issue. I have an inline dryer plumbed in after my main line coming out of the compressor....not sure what is up? But the line gets clogged and starts shooting moisture. It does not come unclogged very easily either. I was barely able to get that one manifold blasted.

Any ideas?

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"

Progress Pics....got the drivetrain painted. I'm a little bummed that I broke the electrical connector on my NP208 xfer case that lights the little 4x4 light on the dashboard. I went to NAPA, but they couldn't help. Anyone out there have one to sell me?

Also got the complete stainless tubing kit from Classic Industries. I didn't do it for show since this truck will be a nice work truck/driver, but I thought stainless would fair better against our Central NY road salt. Brake lines are run...fuel lines are next.
