Re: 72 k20 project
Thanks!
i got a few more parts hacked out. the saddle for the tranny mount. i forgot to grab some metric nuts for the mount otherwise i would have snapped a pic with it up in place. the little pieces of flat bar(barf) are the ends of the crossmember and have threaded holes. their counterparts will be on the frame side and have clearance holes for 1/2-20 bolts. that will allow the center section to be dropped out and hopefully make removal of the drivetrain easier. plus i dont have to figure out a way to make the crossmember removable fromt he boxed frame.... ryan |

Re: 72 k20 project
here it is bolted to the tranny mount. the rubber mount is pretty wasted. it leans to one side and hangs to the rear because of the weight of the steel. hopefully i can get autocad set up soon here at home so i can draw my own stuff and get it cut with some expediency. otherwise ill be waiting on the draftsman to continue and finish this as well as many other parts...
Anyone know of a poly trans. mount for a cummins? same mount as GM and jeep used from the mid 80s till the late 90s at least but i can't find one for the cummins or any other application Ryan |

Re: 72 k20 project
I've used some poly mounts for TH400's on them with luck. Or get a poly cab bushing and use them. Maybe a radiator support set. I used 2 big round poly solid pieces on my Longhorn's trans mount. Those dodge ones suck, they break a lot.

Re: 72 k20 project
after a nice 6+ hour round trip through the beautiful San Juans this is in my garage. its beginning to look like a tranny shop in here. i have a TH400, 4L80E, SM465, three np205s, a 47re, and now this 47rh in here. there is also a dana 70-U-2, gmc dana 60, the dana 80 and ford dana 60 front in the truck as well as the NP241.... add the 454 on the engine stand and the np200 from the jeep and its a nice round picture. its a wonder i have a wife anymore

Re: 72 k20 project
Nice score on the 47RH! Start selling the extras to get a good torque converter.

the guy i bought the tranny from gave me a core TC and i didnt even look at it till i was home. it is a non-LU from i dont know what. either a 727 or a518. i have the core from the 47re so that is no problem. i think i will call Goerend for my TC. just another cool grand.... jesus this stuff gets expensive. i am just glad the drivetrain is pretty much sewn up. i just have to do the seals on the engine and it could be started and ran. very tempting. i also finished(with the exception of a few little bits) the frame boxing in the rear tonight. hopefully i can get the bed soon. then i can fab the fuel tank. for some reason my wife has been hung up on the fuel tank so if i get it out of the way maybe she can quit stressing over it Ryan |

Re: 72 k20 project
finally got all the little bits welded up.
i have some areas i know will be receiving more fab work and left those unpainted. and i will probably have to grind paint in a few areas but i like seeing it black so i squirted it where i could... this is the funny little area where the frame rail has clearance for the shocks in stock form. i had a few different ideas on what to do but in the end this is the one that won the day. |

Re: 72 k20 project
Are you going to leave the shock mounts on the D80 alone, and just mount the shocks according? I think that is how I'm going to do it on mine.

Re: 72 k20 project
i think so, i don't really have any reason to change them. the only thing that i think may cause issue is the plans i have for traction/torque arms. the passenger side shock may or may not interfere with that. i will have to cross that bridge when it comes.

We still put traction bars on dodges with out issues. I plan on putting a set on mine too. If I ever get that far..................

Re: 72 k20 project
Thanks
i did some welding on the tranny x. still need to pull the center section and finish welding it and weld in the rest of the transitions from the frame to the center section including the "boxing" plate for the outside. pictures will explain that better when i actually do it. in the interim, i made up some gussets for the 4"x3" tube crossmember that i replaced the factory one with behind the cab. i may have gone overboard but at least i know it should be rigid ryan |

Re: 72 k20 project
Go big or go home huh? I think all of you that box these are going nuts. Ha Ha I had a 70 K20 I used to pull with a 550hp 396 and I was really surprised how well the frame held up compared to the 73 up frames. I might box under the bed of mine some day, but for now I want to get it going. Keep up that great work!

Re: 72 k20 project
i have never been accused of building to light... in a few places so far i felt like i was even being a little chintzy with the beef. then in others i know all to well that i'm getting it done and then some. i am curious what this heavy b*tch will do to the scales at the co-op when i get done. i just remember the bed hitting the cab with it all twisted up when i had the big tires and tall lift on it.
anyhoo. i welded the little plate into the cross member transition tonight. needs a little clean up and paint once i finish the center section. ryan |
