Flip, where do you get your sand from?? Ill be heading to raleigh tomorrow for the carolina collector car show and swap meet. hoping to check out some truck vendors and look at a cab corner replacement panel. I bought one at the charlotte show from some vendor and the quality is so bad, ill have to do some surgery on that thing to make it look the same as the other side.

i get my sand at tractor suppy its black diamond but its nowhere as cheap as yours. good luck on the hunt for parts.

Well I made it to the classic collector car show today at the raleigh fairgrounds. I was in luck with finding a better replacement cab corner today. I tried to take some pics to show the differance. The main issue is at the bottom of the cab corner where it meets the rocker panel. If you need one of these be sure to look at it in person before purchasing it. When I got home I looked at the sticker from the manufactor on both cab corners and both were from KEYPARTS, it was the exact same sticker, same part number, same everything, but differant part. I also found a thermostat housing i needed for 5 bucks.

I borrowed my cousins stud gun and started trying to attack the dent in my roof. Can any good body guys give me some advise on getting this dent right??? I got the small crease pulled out and the dent is gone now BUT the metal is flimsy now. it pops in and out, if it would stay pulled out then it would almost be perfect but with a slight push it pops back in. the area is about a 6 inch diameter. if you look at the pic you can barely see the purple marker where I outlined the spot. I pulled a small string from one side of the cab to the other side so I could see the low spots. if I pull the dent out its about perfect but when u push it goes back in, How can I fix this???

It's really hard to tell you how to fix that "oil can" you are hearing. I generally use more pins spread around the area and slowly and gently pull each one. There is no step by step instructions. It's more trial and error. I'm sure there is someone that can save the day and tell you exactly how to do it. Every dent is different.

Sounds like you have to shrink it. I haven't perfected it yet.

Shrinking is a lot of fun. I can fake my way thru it. That doesn't mean I'm good. . I have been able to use multiple pins and get the dent out if when there is a oil can. A ridge (body line) can keep tension in the metal. Now that is clear as mud.

If all else fails, can you tack a stiffner to the inside wall of the sheet metal?
I would envision something like a large plate with a hole in the center and tacked in?

But I am NOT speaking from experience mind you, just asking...

get out the torch and shrink that area. its called oil canning. the metal was stretched too far , only way to fix properly is shrink with a torch, or shrink disc

i have the same problem with my roof, mines in the same areas but more to the back of the rested part of the roof! whats the best way to shrink the metal! would someone heat the metal then cool it down with a cold rag? i need to check into this!

McMurphy- i dont think you can do that, for one theres no way to get to that spot without cut a hole in the roof or taking the inner panel out!

allabout- the bottom of that cab looks really good now i can almost not see where you had to patch it in the pictures! but i kept looking back and forth to see the differents, really good job, i would have never guessed you didnt know how to weld before either

I feel like an idiot. I called it tin can. I know better. It is oil canning. Does your dent puller have a shrinking tip on it? It looks like a mushroom. I've used it before to heat up an area and quench it with cold water. It works just takes practice. YouTube also has several videos on shrinking metal.

Thanks for the help guys. Alan>I will have to go back down to the shop and look in the box and see if that mushroom shrinker is in there. It belongs to my cousin so im not real familiar with it. I dont have a torch set yet, just a small propane torch. I have heard of heating it up and sticking a wet rag on it to shrink it but I dont know exactly where I should heat it. I dont want to make it worse. I got it almost perfect now but it will still pop in with light pressure. good thing is it always pops back out by itself. I need to check out youtube tonight and see if any good shrinking tips on there. I wanted to work down in the shop tonight but I ran out of gas for the heater and its cold here tonight, low of 29 degrees.

When I talked to Ron Covell he said "I don't like to quench it with something cold. I let it cool naturally." I didn't get it. He probably wanted me to buy his video.

strodder> I looked at alot of metal working videos on youtube last night and it seems to be a pretty straight foward fix on this oil canning issue. Everyone was heating and cooling with a wet rag and hammer on dolly. I saw a guy on there doing it on the back of a cab with out a hammer or dolly and still fixed the problem. I guess ill be trying it next time I go down to the shop.
