Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Ok dude, I am right there with you on the floor pans and rockers right now.
Just to clarify, when these guys say to fit your door after you have mocked up your rocker panel, what they really mean is to hang the door up on its hinges, and then open and close it to make sure the door will clear the rocker. Especially the at the corners.

LOL

I didnt test the fit of the door by opening and closing it with the rocker tacked up, and now I have to cut my spot welds and drop the front end of that rocker because my door binds on it.

Otherwise man your build is looking sweet!
Keep us posted eh?

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Ran fuel lines, wired carb, finished dizzy setup, finishing brake lines and bleding, and doing body work till my arms falls off. Here is my temp steelies that I am running on with 2.5" port-0-wall white walls, hence the overspray/laziness. It has a flake to it that looks great in the sunlight. Once I the billet smooties come in (6-8 weeks) I will mount those. What do you think of the gold?

Dont mind the old fender, just a mock up

The Daily Driver, thought it was a p%$Sy magnet, but apparently it attracts the cawk!! LOL

I am working on the wiring harness now. the panhard bar is set and I am mid 5 lug conversion on the rear. I also got rid of the ugly gold wheels and went with gloss black for now.
Timeline is 2 weeks until completion. Here is my to do list.
Shocks
Driveshaft
Wiring harness
Paint

Some pics for you
Panhard setup

Fuel done!

Brake lines being run!

Flapper thingies on the intake!

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Hahahahaha
The wife and I were looking at your updates, I scared her by saying I wanted to do my engine like yours !!
She is already telling me to get the guage cluster that I want, which is going to cost more than what I paid for the truck alone!

Then we saw your floor pan and rocker and saw that you didnt do the floor all the way out with the inner rocker before you put the outer rocker on and I told her man that was going to suck getting that inner rocker in now. What are your plans for that gap, are you just going to put in a cap plate to close it up?

I am also assuming you hung your door and it opens/closes good?

I am thinking of fixing mine tomorrow now tha I am caught up on all the other things.

P.S. I liked the gold, but like I told the wife, you would have had to done some more accents to make it look really smart...

Still groovin on your build man, keep feeding us the pics and updates!!

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Trans tunnel done, Cab floor is painted. Fuse box mounted, and wires starting to be run. Brake lines are finished, shocks are ordered. I smoothed the welds and am working on the body filler. I got a donor truck to rob some parts off of so some new pieces will be going on. Monday I am going to lay down some primer on the cab, and then remount the bed. I hope to have all wiring done Monday
as well. I also got the fuel cell finished and cleaned up with some paint. Awaiting the new axles and then the rearend will be reassembled.

Far shot of new sheet metal

This took up my last week. I bought new wheels for the DD. Then I stripped the clear and hand polihed 400 grit and up the lips, then had the tires stretched 19x11 front and rear with 245 front 255 rear. But that's another thread!

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Thanks guys, Yeah the cost of the floor pan rear section was too much money (triple the rocker price!) so just some basic sheetmetal was used since it will be under carpet. The rear inner was in just tacked from underneath.

McMurphy, I thought the gold was going to look good against the black but it just looked cheap to me. The gloss black is a safer bet but looks good for now. Again these wheels will just get me buy for a few months.

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Paint is getting laid. I am not. The Mrs. is getting annoyed of all the $$ and time this beast takes. Good news ill be done real soon! Axless are back! Working on wiring, waiting on little connectors, bulb sockets etc etc the piddly stuff that takes 5 days to get in from CA.
Made my own gauge cluster out of metal and will wrap it with the thin copper once done. I will post more pics later today when done.

Etching primer

high build 2k

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

The body is not fun, it takes forever and is exhausting. The fun stuff is building the motor, bagging the truck. Oh well the end is near. I promise I wont disappoint. The truck is going to a proper updraft booth w high end guns and equipment for the final primer, wetsand, paint. Too much trash in the air at this shop but it works for the etch and prime coats. The final outcome will be sick!
Just a mock up of the gauge layout, starting cutting but the bits where dull. Need to buy more.

Etching and 2k on the bed, no body work done yet filler wise

Here is a fun/boring vid of some of the rides we have here at the shop, and me playing with a Caddy on Hydros.

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

So I finished my gauge cluster out of copper today!

steel frame

instant charisma

But wait....did this fool make a symmetrical matching glove box copper panel? Why yes he did.

So what does a logical person do after all this work with the copper and such? Make it shiny? Hell no, age that thing instantly......viola Patina gauge cluster with matching glove box cover soon.

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

That aged copper looks cool! If it were me, I would do alot more of that stuff on the interior. I would definitely do the radio bezel and the middle of the door panels. When I first saw the bare copper, I was not really sold on it. After you aged it, it made all the difference in the world.

Nice job!

That dash is completely bad@$$! The motor is looking good too. I have the same scoop and similar valve covers but haven't put the covers on yet. Getting inspired to though. Nice work.

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Did you use vinegar to age your copper?
Are you going to laquer the copper or clear coat it to arrest further oxidization?

And I have to agree with chevyresto, if I started in with the copper panels, it would be hard to stop; shifter arm, door panels, like he said... ect...

I dig your build man, keep it up!

One question though, I have seen a few builds with the dash mounted bottle opener. What is that all about?

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

thanks guys for the compliments. I haven't thought about clearing it. I have a left over piece and some matte clear, I will test it out to see how the sheen is.

McMurphy, There was a hole where the A/C or heater knob used to be, I didn't want to leave a blank piece there, so the dash board mounted bottle opener seemed to fit the bill. It's kind of cool you can open a beer from the dash. I got the idea off a rat rod I saw. I guess its kind of hot rod/ rebel thing to do.

Re: My Build: Home Depot Machine

Well, I matte cleared the copper, I am not sure if I like it, it took alot of the color away. I may just sand it down and leave it raw. Let me know what you think of the clear coated copper. I have also been getting pretty good at heat shrink, crimping, and all the fun that comes with wiring.

carb linkage all done

Hockey stick wrap tape instead of plastic loom FTW!!

patina copper

more wiring
