I got my first real job (which launched a 42-year career in telecom) just out of high school in 1967, five days after turning 18. Starting wage was $1.91 1/2 per hour. We were alternating 50-hour weeks (5 tens) and 58-hours (add Saturday). I thought I was rich. The job involved a lot of travel, and after your first relocation you got an extra $9 a day tax-free per diem. Wasn't long after that I bought a new '68 Camaro RS. Gas was still around 30 cents a gallon. Life was good....

Re: Gas Prices - Part 2
I don't remember the last time I saw a full service station. I worked at one in 1972 for .90 per hour, pumped it for 30cents per gallon . Back then there was only 1 station in town that was self serve at 27cents. I just filled my Blazer and it was $4.59 for premium.

Re: Gas Prices - Part 2
While running some errands in Wichita this morning the Tahoe was needing some gas. Our local Quick Trip (QT) gas n go's pricing is a bit strange to me. Three stations spread out thru town, all the same QT brand had three different prices? From $3.79 to $3.69 to $3.57 ?????
Guess I don't understand how all three stations selling under the same brand would have three different pricings with one being a $0.22 per gallon spread from the highest? Seems odd to me?

Re: Gas Prices - Part 2
The story I heard about prices has to do with how close a station is to a major highway. The closer, the higher. Don't know the truth of that, though, but maybe it could be checked out by anyone who cares.

Re: Gas Prices - Part 2
Quite probably a true statement there on the pricing. Seems gas prices are generally higher on turn pike toll roads, a bit of a "captive audience" type situation there comes into play I suspect. Same as pricing of items at concerts and other closed venues.
Just seemed a bit odd to me that there was a $0.22 difference between the same brands altho located nearly 3 miles apart or so. Either way, not much liking the increased cost of gas now days. And here in the flat lands of Kansas our prices are MUCH lower than other states. Living here in "fly over country" does have a few perks, LOL.

Re: Gas Prices - Part 2
Fun fact about the cost of gasoline in CA from the US Energy Information Agency...
"California gasoline prices are generally higher and more variable than prices in other states because relatively few refineries produce California's unique blend of gasoline. California's reformulated gasoline program is more stringent than the federal government's program. California's tax on gasoline is also higher than most states' gasoline tax. California refineries need to run at near full capacity to meet the state's gasoline demand. If more than one of its refineries experiences operating problems at the same time, California's gasoline prices can increase substantially. Even when supplies are available from other West Coast refineries, U.S. Gulf Coast refineries, or from foreign refineries, they can take a relatively long time to arrive in California." and with regard to local price differences... "Prices at gasoline stations are often highest in locations with fewer gasoline stations. Even stations located close together may have different traffic patterns, rent, and sources of supply that influence pricing."

Congratulations, Washington State has the highest price per gallon in the lower 48. What a joke and it's not going to get better anytime soon I fear. |

Maybe not.... We're at $5.70 for 87 octane regular, and a few cents higher at the local Valero. Haven't looked at diesel prices lately.

Re: Gas Prices - Part 2
Gas prices as off late are nothing but price gouging. All the gas companies have recorded record profits. Heck all the prices you see from food to electric bills are price gouging. Kind of funny gas companies are producing so much oil they are exporting more then they import now.
https://www.reuters.com/business/ene...23-2022-12-19/ Like someone mentioned it is entertaining how if you go block to block gas is up or down by .10. I forget what gas station it is but if you pay cash it is .10 cheaper.

Re: Gas Prices - Part 2
On June 27th 2023 the per barrel cost of oil was $67.68. On Sept 18th 2023 that price was $91.47 and it remains over $90 today. The raw material for refineries costs more so it's no surprise that their product will in turn be priced higher.
