ok, got some more pics of the intermediate clutch drum. After I double checked the direction of the seals, and replace them facing the correct direction, i seated the spring base with a rubber mallet, with light taps, the base set nicely and allowed me to take the C-clamps and compress the springs and get the lock ring in place.
here are the pics of the process. the intermediate clutch drum is replaced, and complete ready to install.

I you drove the piston in with a hammer i promise you cut the seals. they have to be installed the way i told you. You can't force the lip seals in, they have to installed very carefully.

I didnt slam down, the rubber mallet was like maybe an inch above the spring base, would that even damage that ring? if so, I'll go back out tomorrow and open that back up and check them before I go on.

I did use clean trans fluid, and the feeler gauge, I just didn't have the Vaseline, I'll recheck it and make sure the seal didn't get cut.

If you can get to some air you can check it by putting air to the hole in the inner bore of the drum and see if the piston moves the clutches all the way out.

The inside lip of the drum where the seals start down in the drum will cut the seals going in if you force it at all. Using a feeler gauge you go around the outside of the piston then the inside bore of the piston to get the seals to start down past the lip on the bore.

The only piston you can force in is the low/reverse in the bottom of the case because they use square cut seals not lip seals.
If you need to see how it's done i will try and take a video this weekend and upload it.

If you don't have a full blown air compressor can the check be done with a 12v compressor with the beach ball fitting?
Just trying to think of a cheap way for him to check with compressed air.

When you use the feeler gauge and the lip seals go past the lip on the drum it will fall right to the bottom with a clunk. It shouldnt take any force. It also helps to rotate the piston a little to get it to go in.

Ok, that gives me alot better idea as to what i am watching and listening for, as that drops
I'll double check the seals befoee i go to work tomorrow. i was thinking there was going to be a bit of air behind the piston that i was going to have to overcome in order to seat properly

well i got very lucky, I didn't tear any seals, I got the forward, intermediate and my pump together and got my pressure test done, sounded good, looked good.
I got the valve body and the guides together today, I have cleaned the pieces and looked at the lube link I was sent a few posts back, I am going to get the trans fluid for flushing out the trans, then get all new fluid for the engine and trans, and get that taken care of, so I know it's clean.

I was worried to.
after it was air tested, i got 2 qts new trans fluid and filled the intermediate pack just to soak the rings and make sure there was no dry rings, and after the flooding rains came, i am just holding on for a bit.

I had modified a bicycle pump to give me a seal test, i wanted a second test because i didnt get to see the first. i wanted to make sure there was no hissing.
i am almost ready to get the trans back together, i am just getting the rings and pump back in.
i had to get creative until i got my friday pay, when i got my 100 psi pancake air compressor.

Ok, been stuck for a bit as to my initial reassembly, everything was good until about a 1/4".
i went through my parts taken out vs the parta going in found i put a part in, that i didnt take out.
Tomorrow, i take that extra out and get everything back together.
And back on the road by next week. I will post more pics as i go.

Im redoing a th350 right now aswell and im at the same point. Only issue I discovered was a bit of air coming out where the snap ring was placed when applying 30 psi.

The direct piston also would not stay up once the trigger was released, but the seal was still made on the pump with the nozzle.

Also, did you have to hold your finger on the other direct drum port on the pump? If i dont, at 30 psi the piston wont rise, but if i do the piston will rise.

Any ideas?

sorry for my delayed response been helping some friends out with their cars and working.
When I retested the seals and such I just charged my foot pump (as seen in the above pics) to 25-30 psi, I put the pump, the intermediate, and the forward clutch packs together, and introduced the air into the "system" I didnt have to put my finger over anything. I just had to make sure everything fit well together, and that the seals were all in good shape.

My transmission will be getting in this week, I charged my battery yesterday and fired up the ole girl, and she sounded good.

yea my intermediate checked fine but this was for the next part the direct drum, I think while dual feeding the flow is allowed out the inlet and outlet direct drum holes to add more flow and that is why I had to hold my finger over the outlet aswell. I started on the forward clutch and caught one of the teflon slash cut seals and it wouldnt make a good seal to air check so Im trying to reshape the seal and make it work.

Soak it in Trans fluid and hold it tight around the piston with a wire tie

ok, the transmission is back in and everything is hooked up, and bolted together, I now figure I have got my flow backwards because when I start her I can get through the gears , but I dont have the ability to go yet, and I am able to see a leak , but everything is tight and together.
any ideas so far?
