Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Your panels look great. Have you thought about using the stuff Rod Doors uses to attach their panels?

Wow you make it look so simple! What glue are you using for attaching the material to the board?

You make the door panel work look easy! I just might give it a try when at that stage of my build. Thanks for the pics.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
I found some more time today to work on the panels. I've tried 4 different types of clips and finally found one that is durable enough not to break. I just found most of the types to be too brittle.
I made a framework that would recess inside the door where I could attach the clips. 3/4" hole saw to make the slots and holes for the clips. You could use a little smaller one but that is what I had. Here are the clips I found to be the best. I had to enlarge the holes in the door one size bigger for these to fit. They can pretty easily be removed without destroying them.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Before I put the two pieces together I ran a bead of hot glue around the slot and the hole. This held the two boards far enough apart that I could get the clips in. These boards are hot glued together.
Here are the clips installed: Here's it snapped into the door. The bottom will be attached with Velcro or something like what Hart_rod mentioned. I'll make more progress tomorrow.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
I don't know if I would call it heavy duty velcro (I know that's what it looks like). The are actually made of hard plastic. I've used them before, they won't slip.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
thoses clips that jugernot showed you are what we use in the industry for upolstery, that heavy velcro over time and with the heat tends to seperate, the clips are the way to go.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Hey just a word of advice: If you haven't already, seal the back sides of your door panels with something; wood/deck seal maybe. If you don't that pressed board will absorb humidity over time and expand/warp.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
All right we finally got some good weather. I welded up my Flowmaster... sounds so much better. Another small problem, my starter was not engaging. I thought I might need a new one, but after a closer look the bolts were just loose.
I did a little work on the panels. I made a peace to fit in the spare tire hole out of 1/2 plywood. I'm still working on the indent under the window. I'm thinking of either a filler peace or make it part of the panel. I also finished the A pillar piece. More pics.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Thanks Rokcrin. It's hard not taking on another project and staying focused on my suburban. I don't know you manage as many projects as you do. I've been watching your suburban 4 door build, it's gonna be sweet! l'm keeping mine a 3dr, I think its funny when I tell my kids to go to the driver's side passenger door and they get mad.
I made some progress today, I finished my tailgate panel, but you'll have to wait a bit for the photos, my server is gonna be down, so my pictures will disappear. I'll post pictures on Monday night.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Hey maybe we can swap rear panel trim. I need another short one, and it looks like you could use another long one. I'll have to check to be sure that's gonna work, but might be a win-win. I also have the piece that goes between the drivers-side split.

Thanks kyull. It'll be no time before yours is painted and you'll be doing your interior.
Today I went and looked at a '71 Cheyenne long bed that I would like to convert into a short bed. Just have to convince the wife. She's right next to me now, should I ask her? We all need a project right? I mean, the suburban is almost done and I need something to keep me busy.

Well some how she said yes! I picked it up Monday night. It's a 71 Cheyenne long bed with a 350/350, no A/C and power steering. It also came with a short bed frame. Here it is:
