Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
I know it's a little late, but on my last project I painted the firewall semi black, all the way up to the rubber strips (rear of the hood), then went Patina behind that. It turned out pretty nice and made for a good transition point.

Ewwww! Fiberglass over rust...brilliant!
Spent some time wire wheeling tar and dirt...still more to go. Looking better! Bad pic, but Got the welds completely dressed and ready for a bit of filler.

fiberglass over rust used to be a quick fix to sell a car. They might still do it today.

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Hey PurdueSD
I love that build...do the new cab corners come with notches or holes so as to be able to drain the water out of them??? I am going to have to do some of that same stuff to mine....I am just trying to think of a way not to have them rust out again... Your cab reworking looks great from here. MikeC |

Thanks guys!

I got these from classic parts, they are actually quite a but differently shaped that the original. They aren't as round where they roll under. They fit pretty decent though.

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
I got mine from Classic Parts as well. I had to do quite a bit of massaging to get the lower door gap right, but I had to use a lot more of the panel than you did. Looks great BTW

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Yes, I noticed the same issue...the gap widens at the bottom where it rolls under. You can see it if you look closely at my in progress tack welding pics.
"For this truck". It wasn't worth fixing it to me. I would have had to slice the patch a couple times and spread it... A lot of extra work on a place that you can't really see after the truck is assembled. Thank for the compliments!

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Finally made some progress this week! Spent some time with a torch and scrapper getting rid of roofing tar undercoating, wire wheeling and finally priming and painting the bottom of the cab. Then got the cab back and bolted on the frame for good!

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Next up was pulling the engine one final time. This gave me access to weld up a couple unused holes in the firewall and wire wheel before prime and paint. Turned out pretty decent...really starting to come together!

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Did the same inside... Forgot to take a pic after the inner firewall, toe board and kick panels got paint, but here it is in primer. Have the dash completely stripped and in primer also.
Filled the gas neck hole and did my first round of paint blending. Worked on blending the new cab corners back in also. Not completely happy with it yet, but it'll get there. A big improvement over what was there though!

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Good ol' semigloss black rustoleum. Going for the electrical tape look.
This truck would need completely stripped anyways if I ever wanted to put it in nice paint, so not much to loose.

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Love this build. Have you planned out your TBI system beyond the tank and fuel pump? I have the same donor and I'm wrestling with whether to convert my engine to carb or leave the TBI. Not sure how to wire up the wire harness and the computer. Also do you have to plumb an O2 sensor into the exhaust? I had decided on switching to a carb but now I'm hearing I may have to change the cam and distributor.

http://warrperformance.com/?product=...ontrol-and-vss For the 200 bucks it was worth a shot to me. I've got a 700r4 from the donor, so I went with the optional tranny control. If this all works out like it should, I will have sever hundred less in a more reliable setup. Intake , carb, distributor, trans control all add up pretty quick. I'm a little out of my element, so we will just have to see how it all works out.

Re: Lost and Forgotten 51
Love you build, doing the same with my cab soon. What kind of welder you used to weld that cab corner?
I am particularly interested in finding out how did it go with the TBI wire harness you bought in ebay. Have you conected it? If so, did you have any problems with it, what kind of O2 sensor did you use? Planning to buy the same wire harness in a week or two. I am also want to get my 350 TBI engine started. Great build! |

Honestly haven't had much time to put towards the truck as of late. Winter time is usually my productive period. I did have to purchase a inline vss generator, got that from jagsthatrun. Harness looks good just need to speed some time getting this thing hooked up and running. I mounted my ecu directly above the glove box liner. I'm gunna use the O2 from my donor suburban.
