Re: 64 chevy swb on a 94 chevy caprice frame w/ lt1

Before I pulled the cab off for the 5th time, i made a rough template to restructure the firewall. Moving the motor back was going to be a lot of work on the Caprice frame.. It could have been done but everything, including the shifter linkages line up.

Working on that hole... I had a 2 foot by 2 foot piece of 20 gauge bent at a 45 degree bend at about 11 inches down then another 45 degree at about 16 inches. Had about an hour left before leaving for the weekend so I started cutting into it..

And this is what the inside looks like... I will work on it some more when I get the cab back on or at least level.. Working with the cab tilted was hard on a fat guy... I will work on filling the other small holes later in the week. I am keeping the square hole for a vintage AC....

I am trying to see the point of doing that. What are you trying to do? Make a cleaner firewall since the motor sits slightly forward?
Not critisism, just wondering what the method to your madness is.
So far, your creation is pretty cool.

Yes, fill in the hole. It was going to be a big undertaking to move the motor "up and back" 2-3 inches. I thought of several ways and landed on this one. It looked like some yayhoo put a truck on a car chassis. So decided to smooth it out!!

Re: 64 chevy swb on a 94 chevy caprice frame w/ lt1

Well this took about 5 hours. I used the caprice brake booster. I drilled new holes then cut the caprice firewall out and welded it over the 64 firewall to make a smooth clean finish. I will take a pic of it with the booster off when I get the inside mocked up. The caprice pedal mount is the backing plate for the booster. The pedal, rod, booster and switches all matched up so I used it.. The pedal will need to be cut, extended and bent around.

I cut the rear part of the truck pedal assembly basically in half, keeping the front part to mount steering column to. To make sure all the wiring connectors cleared, I had to relocate one of the brake switches (not sure if it a neutral lock out or the brake lights). It is actually a tight fit with all the wiring connectors on the column but it seemed to fit.

Now what frame are you going to use on the caprice? This is a great build! If you part that caprice body out I may need some stuff!

I really like the lengths you are going to in order to have it looking clean and "natural". All that extra effort is going to pay off in the finished project, that's for sure.

Yes it is getting parted out when I am done. I already have some interest on this site for the chrome fender trim.

I have been using the trunk as my outside tool box (REDNECK). I told my wife that I am so fond of it that I may torch off the back half and keep it in the back yard to store tools in... I think my neighbors love it they will even love it more when it is a perminent structure...

Thanks, it is coming together. I am starting to find when I move something a little is sure messes with other things a lot... Like the brake assemblies location in comparison to the column and the columns location to the booster.. Less room there then what I had sketched out in my mind!!!

Re: 64 chevy swb on a 94 chevy caprice frame w/ lt1

I am eyeing up the carprice under dash heat and AC and thinking it would work.... Especially since I flattened out the firewall... HMMMM!!! Save me a thousand bucks and could get parts at the local auto parts store..

Good luck on using the AC and under dash heat. I think you are doing a great job of putting the truck on the newer caprice frame. Keep it up

Well it won't work. It is to thick!! I eyed up the caprice firewall and thought about cutting out the part around the AC and meshing it into the 64's firewall. But..... Decided to just smooth it off and go with a old air unit.

Re: 64 chevy swb on a 94 chevy caprice frame w/ lt1

Worked some more on the firewall this weekend. Filled the rest of the holes including the wiring harness hole. I cut a new one out a little bigger and under the inner fender bolts.

I also tore deep into the caprice. I pulled the entire wiring harness out and started making plans on how to use it. The power doors, windows and mirrors harness is plug and play so 2 connectors and it goes away. It won't be the prettiest truck under the hood but it will function!!!

Next goal.... Started before March 1st!!! We shall see.
