Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

larry, yeah the bed has been mounted. this truck has been done, I'm just doing things to it here and there. You have to cut the rear of the s-10 frame by about 5" in the back if it is a 117.9" wb. So the reg size AD bed will fit. Is this what you are asking? I can pm you some pics if you need. I just made my own mounts for the front of the bed and the rear of the bed sits on my tow hitch and is bolted to the frame. My wooden bed slides in and out, I attached the barn wood to my existing plywood that I had in there. So it is real convenient to take the bed on and off, if I mounted all the wood, I'd be in a whirl wind. I have had to get under there to change a pinion seal, u joint and put in pinion shims already, so it is nice to have a removeable bed.

Winter has been pretty mild for us, but this is what we got this weekend. I snagged another longbed frame and a trailer on a trade. The 52' you see there, I finally tried to start. I got it this summer and will start a build thread on it. It rolled over good, but has no spark, so I gotta get some things for it. It has a 235 in it. I have plans for this, more on the traditional side, and another s-10 swap and more plans for my 51'. Here is the carport I am working on the side of the garage. I need more room and fast.

Thanks for the lead on the used parts yard. I will call them to try to track down the driver side interior window frame trim that I'm looking for.

Thanks

marc,

no doubt man, its all about networking. They used to specialize in AD trucks, they have a couple trailers dedicated to doors and grilles, so some of it stays
inside atleast. I can for see myself having something like this eventually. I'm going to look into my local zoning laws. I'm all about saving these old gems.

Cool pictures. To bad you did'nt get to show off your truck. Did you have any problems when you hooked up your power steering pump lines. I bought a new s10 hp line but the fitting on the end is different where it hooks into the 350 pump.

Yeah I'll get to show off the shop truck sooner than later. I got some stuff I wanna do to her anyway. As for the pws line. I almost made that same mistake. Just buy pws lines for a sbc and they will be proper fitment. I think they were less than 20 bucks for them. Don't quote me on that. so don't buy s-10 lines.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

yeah man my truck has been done. I'm just doing little things here and there on her. I think I might swap engines out this spring. I'm slowly working on 355 with vortec heads. Hoping for atleast 400hp on this engine. Working on a 52' with inline 6 and I'm going to paint that. I am starting a build thread eventually.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

daverod,

thanks man. Glad I could be of some help. I'm working slowly on another truck, will start a thread soon. Also I'm about to install an auto door lock on my 51' within the next few weeks, along with my door logos hopefully. So I'll then post some more pics. would like to post some pics of me traveling this summer with it. Just been soo busy trying to make room and build some garages for my projects. Working on another engine slowly as well.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

Very cool. Good to see you busy. Can't wait for the logo I've been thinking about mine. Somthing in construction. I've been thinking about "Mammoth Errection". HA ha What did you do for headlight bulbs? Also turn signal switch? I was thinking if I did the headlight relay thing I might get by with the 6volt headlight switch? I also have a wire that says ignition ignition? I have the same harness as you. I think it goes to the ig switch but its a really long wire.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

daverod, I used an aftermarket 12v switch from classicparts.com it was like 34 bucks, headlight bulbs are 12v, they are like 7 bucks each I think. I had one go bad right out of the box though. I don't run any headlight relay, but I do have this weird problem that every once in a while all my lights will go out. If I mess with the switch they will come back on. It doesnt do it very often, so I have no idea what is really causing it. I use a dimmer switch on the floor which runs high and low beam, even have it wired into the gauges so the orange light lights up when your high beams are on. As for you ignition wire.... I have an aftermarket cylinder (the original ones aren't mean to roll the engine over with a turn of a key, they just connect the circuit and you'd use the foot start) you can get those switches at the auto part store. Ignition wire should wire into it. So you have the EZ wire 21 circuit harness?

thanks bud. I do have the 21 circuit one. I like the foot swith thing. Someone said to use heat sinks if i wanted to use the 6 volt headlight switch. I'm using it untill it burns up. I think I might see if I can use those headlights with the signials in the lights.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

5-17-12

Door locks. Well, I have searched tons of companies out there for bear claw latches. All I wanted to accomplish was using my original, turn down handles and be able to have keyless entry. Everyway I cut it I'd but around 250 and up price range. Weather I bought kits or things individually.

So I bought a keyless entry unit and accuators. This is my prototype bolt on dead bolt system. The whole unit will slide in the truck door, through the access panel, and will mount more towards the bottom of the door. All I should have to do is mark my pattern on my door, drill four parameter holes and the dead bolt hole, then just bolt it to the door. The only thing you will see is the four bolts on the door, everything else will be inside the door. Then just make a hole in the cab for the dead bolt to slide into.

I have yet to try this, but I feel like it should be pretty easy, as long as your doors line up. (which my drivers side door is not, big reason I want to lock it and get it to line up right). So that being said, I feel this little contraption should be good for anyone wanting keyless entry and to use their complete original door latch system. So I hope it works, I'll keep you posted.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

papa52, the fuel gauge you will need a voltage reducer
http://www.classicparts.com/Fuel-Gauges/products/850/
http://www.classicparts.com/Bulbs/products/46/ (bulbs)

I replaced most of my instrument bulbs, I think one or two might have been from a 6v
and they work. The turn signal, I'm sure would work too. But you prolly need the wiring diagram for it to work with the ez kit. I had to contact ez a few times, sometimes it was impossible to reach tech support, but when I did they were helpful. Oh and I ended up using a an aftermarket turn switch that enabled 4 ways. So my turnsignals are 4 way bulbs. Lastly on the fuel gauge, that gauge will only read 30 ohm sending units, if you have an aftemarket tank, get a 30ohm gauge. I have read somewhere there is a converter for it if you have a 90ohm gauge though. Something that would make a lot of peoples lives a lot easier.

Re: 51' 3100 build in PA New to Site

papa, for your gas gauge, it needs power to operate which is now 12v system, but he gauge is for 6 volt, so that is where the reducer comes in. BUT it can't read a 90 ohm sending unit. SO power up your gauge, it will read full, for it to read your sending unit in your tank, it will require an ohm conversion of some sort. I have read somewhere briefly about it. But haven't researched since. I just got an aftermarket tank and sending unit. Your gauge fluxuates do to resistance, that is what the ohms is all about, reading resistance. The amp meter, I'm not sure about, I just hooked up a volt meeter. There is probably alot of info on what you did and if it works, I'm sure it will be fine.

98layinframe. Glad you like the build and yes envy is a strong feeling. Been there, but may it motivate you. if you have knowledge on s-10s you will be fine
working on your truck. If you go the swapping route. PM me and maybe I can come out and see what you got going on. my name is Henry
