Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

Alright - time for some updates - had to yank the transmission as it appears the teeth on the flywheel were all torn up. So learned quickly how to replace a ring gear on a flywheel. The transmission needed to come out because I'm forgoing the manual clutch due to space issues with the headers for an internal McLeod clutch - more to come on that later in the week. I wired up the headlights using relays along with the horn with a new style relay and the fan was already on a relay. So headlights - check - horn check - windshield wipers check - temp gauge and fan relay check. Put the weather strip and glass in the drivers door after pulling new rollers in - so all glass in ready to put door panels back on after they get painted. Alright.. time for some pictures.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

Been busy working on the old girl - tranny back in with Mcleod internal clutch... mounted master - built linkage - waiting on a fitting to put the finishing touches on the clutch and then I can throw the high hump in place and lay the fatmat I picked up. Also welded some small angle iron in the raised bed to give the sides a cleaner look - the full size angle chrome would have interfered with a couple of the fender bolts... welded in the tailgate cover and hidden latches... and waiting on the tailgate links to finish up the rear... exhaust done except tips... been a very busy boy the last couple of weeks. Now for the pictures....

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

Interested to see your hydraulic clutch set up. Did you use the Novak kit also or another brand.

I used a Novak kit on my conversion.

I'm running a TKO 600 transmission - Mcleod makes a throw-out where you can pull the nose of the tranny with 5 bolts and slap their's on and your off to the races. Was super easy.

Thanks for the kind words - hopefully some more progress this weekend... hoping to get some measurements for the two piece drive-shaft figured out so I can get them going on that - it's really the last big thing to make the wheels turn - the rest is painting up the rear of this thing and plumbing the air management.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

Thanks man... it's builds like yours that keep guys like me motivated. I also play this youtube video when I need inspiration to get back out there and figure out the next piece... regret sometimes not going with a more original restoration project.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

Alright some more updates... rear now painted.. started putting the fenders and steps on today - having a challenge with the driver's side step not lining up - but did get the passenger side on and aired it out so I could see how it looks -oh and I finished the tailgate with the hidden latches and the tail gate links.

Time for some pictures I suppose.

Finally sent the drive shaft off last weekend... waiting to hear back from them.. should get on the horn and give them another ring.

Oh and got the lokar emergency brake cables installed.... the list is dwindling.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

Steps all on along with rear fenders... need to wire up some tail-lights... drive shaft in - managed to break an arm on the rear passenger sensor - so that's on order - hmmm... I bled the clutch and the brakes but the brakes are still soft... might have to pull the master off again and re-bench bleed it - I did manage with no brakes to move it about the drive-way - felt good just to have it move - not really happy with the feeling of the steering - not sure what to do about that. 1 step forward - two steps back.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

Time for some more updates - interior tied up - new steering column with 4 way flashers - carpet - door panels on - and new seat in. I finished up all the wiring that all looks good... truck still running hot so I need to get it in to a mechanic - I've looked at everything I can think of - fan, thermostat, timing the only thing I can think is the damn water pump isn't working on this new rebuilt engine - figure I'll get it in and up on the racks and walk under it with someone with more experience and see if they can't dial it in for me.

No air locked in the block?
Have you tested the CFM on your fan? and is it really pulling the Amp it's suppose to?

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

thanks for the thoughts turtleman - I've burped the radiator using a radiator funnel - I'm looking at the fan now to see how many CFM's it's putting out - have changed out thermostats and even attempted to run without one to see if that made a difference - I've checked the mixture of antifreeze to make sure it wasn't too heavy. I've got some other things I need the shop to do including a front-end alignment - so I'm just going to see if they can't figure it out for me.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin

I hope its nothing major... 99% of the time its something that's staring you right in the face and obvious ,, like a loose connection or something...

I had a overheating issue awhile ago that turned out to be the overflow canister had heated and shrunk so it held to much pressure and would overflow... Drove me Nuts trying to figure it out until I had a friend of mine say HEY!! Look at that!

Did you have to clearance the bed panels in order for the axle to recess up when aired/laid out?

Thanks. I'm assuming that was the case because the backspacing on the wheels? Also, what is your tire size? I've read a 28" tall tire is the max and still allow the bed to lay out and not contact the inside top of the step fender.
