Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

mid-day break...

the rear is out, all un-needed brackets are removed and an un-needed crossmember. I think over the last 18 hours i've ground and punched out 30+ rivets. i think i'm about done with rivets now. uhg, wait, i have to do the trans xmember yet....

anyways. I also repaired one of the rear braces for the running boards. It was cracked, so i ground it down and welded it up. I only have flux core wire right now, but after a quick grind it doesn't look bad. I need to do the same on the other side too.

I'll post pics later tonight.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

after getting the rear out and all of the brackets, I took some time to clean up the frame. wire wheeled the whole thing and it looks pretty good. here are some shots from that whole process.

my daughter wanted to help, so i handed her the wire brush while i took a Mt Dew break.

Made some progress on the whole height issue...

And here's the broken bracket i was talking about.

Like i said, i just have flux core wire right now, and these will never be seen, so i was pretty quick with it.

here's my try at hiding my bed and clip from the neighbors...

And the clean garage before i messed it up again cleaning the engine.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

so then after that i started to work on cleaning up the 402 i'm dropping in this thing. got one side done, then moved to the other side. I was wearing my safety glasses the whole time, but what i failed to realize is that the second side was still pretty moist with oil and grease. This is the result of that "failure to notice"

but, in the end, i ended up with this for a nice clean engine:

and then in primer:

and then in paint. (i just leave the camera on auto, but it's chevy orange)

Levi it is coming along very nice! I think I have some short chrome BBC valve covers you can have if you want them. And that BB is definitely not a tall deck. Tall decks have 2 thermostats in the intake manifold and usually have an odd vibration dampner with cast pulleys. I can't believe that truck was in IOwa! You definitely lucked out with that truck!

I also love your body parts hiding spot! I'll see how things go. I am in the middle of trying to get my car done by April 4th, and it is torn apart farther than your truck.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

so speaking of banker...

I placed my order with Scotts Hotrods today. I will be getting their super slam mustang II IFS, power rack, brakes, under cab booster, BBC mounts, rear super slam 4 link, step notch, bags, and shocks.

Should be here in a couple days. right jeph?? more like a couple weeks.

I started boxing the frame tonight after picking up some steel this afternoon. I have 4' on both rails tacked in up front, and will tackle more tomorrow. I really need to find a torch so i can make light work of the under cab cross member, but i'll get to that soon enough. I have pics, but will save them until the end of the weekend.

and ordered a bunch of shinny parts from summit... Engine should be going together next weekend with a test fit to mark where the trans x-member will go and how much floor needs to be cut.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

ok, so i've been behind on pics. Well, here are some pics.

Personally, I like the last couple the best. although the ones with the plates fitting in are pretty sweet too.

ok, so this is the frame before any boxing took place. Really clean and really straight overall.

I was pretty stoked to get a bunch of steel. I've never bought steel like this before, so it was a cool experience. I wish i had half the tools they had at the place i picked it up from. I ended up with 40' of .125"x6" plate, 24' of 2"x3"x.25" tube and a 4x8 sheet of 18ga sheet metal. All cut down to manageable 4" lengths

Let the paper cutting begin!!

and the tracing...

I wish i could say this was on the first fit. I will say though that the first plate took about an hour to make(not counting the paper time), but the second one went a lot faster. btw, note how the back of the plate (under the cab) is not out to the edge... well, i tacked it in before i realized that a rivet was in the way of it coming out. So, the cutoff wheel came out and i started over.

btw, i did pick up, then modified a welder cart last weekend. Also got a gas tank too. welds so much better with gas.

So these next two shots show the only rust in the entire truck. All of the cab mounts are good, as is all of the outer sheet metal. It's just these little holes in the floor that need to be delt with. Oh, and that square one was an access hole that needed to be cut to get the MC out.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'

This is the only time my wife has... well, maybe not the only time, but the only time i have proof of her working on my truck. I figured she couldn't do much harm vacuuming out the dirt

As i was unpacking, i kept mumbling to myself in a cartman voice... shinny parts... i got shinny parts... My wife was worried.

and yeah, leave it to my son to stack the boxes with the lightest one on bottom. There was literally 120lbs in the top 3 and like 5lbs in the bottom one.
