Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Ok been busy with the 6l90 and brakes a few other odds n ends .. Things are shaping up nicely now. I grabbed a 2008 truck driveshaft for cheap from a junkyard for the 6l90 slip yoke and got to looking at it and am now going to shorten and use it instead of having a new one built. I found a 1410 yoke for my dana 60 online for 34$ so everything will match on the driveshaft nicely now. Today I got the exhaust manifolds mounted and in place and nicely enough they clear the frame with plenty of clearance. I got a set off a guy on the camaro 5 forums for 70 bucks!!!! these are the 2010 l99 vvt engine manifolds the 425 horse one so should handle what my engine throws out nicely enough. I also recently went back through and revised my ecm and wiring fuse block mounts for the fuel injection harness. Word to wise. Do not use the power train relay activation wire on the ecm it doesnt work at all becuase it requires input from the bcm to activate. I used my coil wire coming of my frame/chassis harness to power up the engine and trans computer relay set and works great still need to get the ecm reprogrammed next. I revised my ecm fuse block a bit using soom scrap abs I had laying around and have it pretty compact now to mount under the center console setup.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Also got the 6l90 and engine back in the frame and mounted down now. The trans shop had a hard time with the 6l80 changing it over lol. They had a "donor" transmission given to them laying around and they had believed it was a 6l80e setup. Well they called me up and said the output shaft is too big lol. I went over eyeballed it counted teeth and told well yeah of course it won't work!!!!! It is the wrong transmission lol. They then told me what the "donor trans" came from. Well to make it a long story shortened. I now have a 6l90e rebuilt with new clutches new reverse drum and all assundry hardware for 1500$..... Much cheaper then junkyard diving for one then having to rebuild it lol. Got it installed and looked at the trans pan way off level by almost 15 degrees so broke out some plate scraps and spaced the trans to where it is level. Going to be working on the driveshaft soon and will make the corrections in how the driveshaft angles to help level the driveline out some. Will go back later with a aluminum block machined for the sapcing needed and make it solid all the way across the mount setup.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Sounds like you got a decent deal on a new trans.
Your trans pan doesn't have to be level. Typically the engine and trans is lower in the rear. IIRC it is about 4 degrees down to the rear. Your trans output shaft needs to be at the same angle as the pinion shaft on your rear end.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Well in the midst of trying to get my shifter cable in hand discovered a slight problem lol...... The chevy shifter have a 3 inch stroke in travel to shift and the fords use only a 2 inch stroke in travel when shifting........ So now to customize a shifter for my console that will work. Luckily I have a lokar trans mount shifter I am in the process of modifying to work on the ford center console.... Hate to just scrap and throw it away as nice as it is.... Will talk to the machinist about some nice scrollwork aluminum plate to surround the shifter stick where it comes out of the console!!!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
That is correct. With the carburated engines, the carb pad on the intake should sit level or slightly down to the rear. This will put the crank centerline at aprox 4 degrees down to the rear. This should be the same as the angle of the pinion in the differential, for smooth operation of the dirveshaft.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Hey Truck,
I used a 700r4 model shifter for the 6l80/6l90 in my truck . I started out with a tail mounted shifter then went and got fancy with it lol. made some mounting brackets and put it in my console of the truck. On the 700 tailshaft mount you have to remove the material between the bolt holes to get it to mate to the back on the 6l80 housing will get a picture of it tonight and post it up later. Sean part number: ATS6700ETM Automatic Trans Shifter 700-R4 8" Tailmount

Hey Truck,
Here is a picture of the tail shaft mount mod to get the lokar to fit the 6l80. there are two sets of bolt holes in the bracket where it bolts to the tranny so it can fit either the 700 or the newer 4l60 I removed the material between to holes to get it to match up to the bolt pattern on the 6l80. Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Well been a busy beaver last couple of days and here are some more photos of the interior work and how it is coming together. Truckzilla was nice to meet ya and anytime ya gots a question im me etc and I will see what I can figure out on it.. Let me know the spacing on the rear drum brake mount plates and how close that dodge adapter is to it?? Will help alot in getting a good solid set of brakes made for the 3/4 and 1 tons of your year models. Ok to the pics!!!!!
Sean the first set is of the carpet install and roughing it in the truck! I noticed they said perfect fit but as I have expected anything but perfect I bought the carpet from ACC carpet source for the truck. The foot panels have a 1/4 inch gap between the carpet and the metal wall so will use some trimmed pieces off the doorsill to underlay the main carpet there so the insulation doesnt show through...

This set is of the back cab wall cover I am working on at the moment. I found some nice smooth vinyl car material at hancock so will in the next few weeks start covering the abd panels with it. I am going to have to rework the cab corner sepaker panels since they are not quite matching up at the moment. But makin progress!!!!!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Here are the finished back cab wall panels, shore enough going to have to redo the speaker pods on each sie since they aren't quite matching up to the other panels. Plus I saw some ways to make some tweaks to them also to make them look even better. I attempted using super trim 90 adgesive in the spray can at first but gace it as alost cause the vinyl doesnt take it very well so I saw a tube of ahesive for weatherstripping under my workbench and went hmmm??!!?? maybe it'll work and sure enough presto the vinyl stuck to the panels without any truoble. so three hours later here they are. Had to do quite a bbit of strecthing to get wrinkles out but turned out quite nice!!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Hey Sean, It was great to meet you and see the Smurf-hauler in person. You really got it going on! Hopefully next weekend, I’ll have a chance to check out the adapter and thanks again for the parts and all of the insights you gave me. Anyone can do a simple ½ ton but it takes a lot more to redo an old 8 lug truck since no one makes bolt-on rear discs like you came up with.
I wish I were as far along with my POS as you are on ol’ blue, but things are what they are; something only time and cubic dollars can change. The covered panels look good man, as will the rest of the interior. I can’t wait to see what the assembled console will look like with that side bent Lokar shifter sticking up out of it. I forgot to ask about the specifics on the tailshaft extension you put on your previous transmission because I want to get rid of that rubber mounted U-joint coupling that is one the 6L80 right now. And thanks for telling me about needing to use a long shaft U-joint yoke in there. |

Oh, I forgot to add, I am so thankful that I live in Fort Worth! The traffic over there is terrible! But I guess those on the east side of the Metroplex already knew that and are used to it, not to mention that there is construction going on every where in between!

Hey Truckzilla,
go to GM parts Giant.com and look up the 2007 - 2008 escalade 6.2l with 2wd transmission setup it has the correct tail housing for your trans but beware there are 6 different output shafts for the 6l80e transmission so you will need to make sure the tail shaft is going to match the housing. Am gonna keep rolling along till she is done Sean

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D
Hey Guys,
Got some more work done tonight on the rear cab panels. They are turning out very nice. I made it into 3 pieces intially since I messed up on a few cuts on the panels. It works out since the bottom brackets are going to hold the carpet in place in several points along the panel and speaker pods. Also last night got a new speaker panel template made and going to take another stab at them since the first didn't work out quite how i envisioned them. I am going tommorrow to pick up some more of the abs for the speaker panels and the firewall covering from a local placetics supllier and start on the speaker panels and the firewall covers. Take a look and enjoy! Sean

Hey Sean, I'm anxious to see what the finished panels look like with the speaker grilles in place. Are you going to try and color match them in any way? The main panels across the back of the cab look very good. Hopefully I can do something similar across the back of my squarebody even though it will be hidden by the bench seat.
And my transmission crossmember should be arriving from POL today. Keep after it man! There's no rest for the dedicated. |
