Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
Almost done with the re-hab on the Eaton.. go a little more to do on the passenger side then it's just waiting for the disc brake adapter brackets before I put it back where it goes.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
I have some brackets on the way.. need to buy a set of rotors and pads and some new shocks and then wrap up the rear.
The airlines and brake lines will get run later. I haven't decided yet if I want to build the front suspension next or restore the cab. Both will cost about the same so I geuss it will mostly come down to mood. lol

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
Are you using gas with your welding? Looks like you are just flux core welding to me. If you are, and your welder can convert to gas...its some of the best money you will ever spend.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
This one can't. The only welding left on this beast will be the patches for the cab. It will be messy with a flux core, but I think I can get through it.
If I decide to do another one after this an upgrade in this area will be high on my list!

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
Right on man... Gotta make due with what you have. Just a little constructive criticism.. Looks like you need to step up the heat a little more. Not sure how much penetration you are getting. Also, the sweep needs to be a little wider when the torch tip goes back and forth between the two pieces of metal. Looks like you are pushing your welds a bit fast. Not enough wire to fill when welding, try slowing down just a bit.
Im no pro...but know a little. |

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
I'm a little stuck right now. Waiting for the brake brackets from RuffStuff and I have to wait till payday to but the rotors because my wife's laptop went poo poo and I have to fix that first.
I thought about putting the rear back in the truck, but I have the truck sitting too close to the wall -- I'm pretty sure the axle won't come out on tat side it I bolt it back up so I need to wait till I have the brackets and rotors installed before I put the rear back under the truck.

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
Getting a little bit done.... sure looks easier on the Saturday morning hot rod shows! lol
Gotta get some clear to cover the rotors so they won't look like doo doo (man they pick up patina fast!)

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
looking good! just curious, why dont you want air ride for the front if your gonna already rebuild the stuff up there? you already have the drop spindles, i would just throw the bags up front too! just my .02 though..
ive always wanted to swap to pb trailing arms, maybe one day! good work so far man...ive been using a little poo poo welder too on my build but im scared to use it for the frame stuff lol. flux core does make more work for you but its been getting it done for me, just needs a lot more grinding!

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
I'll probably swap to bags in the front at a future date. I want to use Nate's dropmember up there but don't have the money for that right now.
I'll revisit the front later -- put in the dropmember, tubular arms, c-4 rack and shock-waves. If I don't hit a lottery ... don't see that happening real soon though. lol

Re: Heavy Chevy -- the penny pinchers rebuild
It may not look like much has happened but .... I have the rear suspension just about buttoned up, I sorted out the lug/hub fitment issues and just for giggles she is sitting on her rear tires instead of jack stands for the first time in over 2 years.
Getting ready for vacation but I'll be moving on to the front suspension when we get back. Here are some "aired up" and "dumped" side elevation pics. The height of the front is close but it's somewhat guesswork until I get it reassembled.
