Re: How do you afford it?
i went to a tech school for welding and was fortunate enough to land a job in aerospace....the key thing for me is not to go out for lunch, and really realize what i spend my money on!!! i dont smoke and barely drink now, and i just pay off my bills in the beginning of the month and whatever i have left over i can spend on my truck or the girl, but i found a loop hole in that cause i bought her a project truck

I don't.I work 65-80 hours a week and so does my girlfriend, just to pay bills. We bought a house a year and a half ago, have two car payments,cc debt(20+k) and a 10k loan to pay on.Taxes this year payed for the engine work and transmission.Bodywork will probably be quite a while away.Thats if I keep it.Oh and we are getting married this Sept.Theres even more debt and stress

I buy and sell just about anything. If I think I can make a profit off of it, I'll buy it and flip it. The parts that I make and sell, that money usually goes into the truck. Pretty much anything that comes off the CNC table and gets sold goes into the truck account. Yeah, account. I have a checking account JUST for truck parts! ![]()

![]() Sexytary for a group of pathologists. Work 50-70 hours a week. Hubby owns his own business (his side jobs pay for his fishin' trips). We have a deal with the son (who will own the truck when he's 19) that for every dollar he earns and puts towards the truck, we'll match it. BUT he has to be out there wrenching on it the same # of hours his dad or I are out there. Kinda like the "Habitat for Humanity" of Chevys. If not, I'll have me a mighty nice '67 K10 in a year. ![]()

Re: How do you afford it?
Hmmm..money for my truck..well its anything thats left over after all the priorities are paid...and lately that hasnt been much. Plus the fact that I seem to keep buying "projects" that I can't seem to pass up. (latest is a 63 Biscayne).
I look at it this way...I do what I can, when I can. Try to find parts cheap..swap meets..ect. I cant afford to just buy a truck and then throw $20-30K at it..and be done...so for me, part of the enjoyment is doing most (if not all) of the work myself!! (saves a lot of money). I figure, if I hold on the my "projects" till I'm old enough to retire and really work on them...so be it! After all..they don't make em like that anymore. Just keep em from rusting...lol.

Re: How do you afford it?
That is my favorite quote from the whole thread.
My job/pay is contract based working in I.T. It's like seasonal work. Sometimes I need to make 8 months pay last 12. I try to pay cash and if I use a credit card, pay it off every month. Even with pretty good pay and only 1 car payment (out of 5), my truck has only gotten further from completion (Cannibalized for my son's project). I set a threshold on my savings that I don't want to dip below just to have the 3 months reserve and I haven't been able to do much besides use any surplus to take care of all those unexpected expenses that come up. It's still on the back burner until I get closer to being debt free. Plus, I'm using what extra I can set aside to improve my shop so I'll have a comfortable place to work on it. |

Re: How do you afford it?
I get $12.50/hr 3-5 hrs a week, at my local public access channel. Good pay for a fun and easy job, and it pays for what the rents don't, like parts for my Tahoe. I am definitely lucky that my parents pay gas and ins, etc, but i know what work is and i work all summer on the farm, and this summer i will work at the pub. access, so i'm not a spoiled little rich kid, like some i know. My dad is the Director of Treasury at a major hog company, and he has worked a long time, and i respect him and my mom's dedication to our hog farm, family and community, and i know how to work and succeed, all life lessons from my parents.
