That windshield area looks great! I've got the same rust going on in my truck, I'll be hitting you up when I get around to fixing it, if you don't mind.

Looks great!

Thanks. No I don't mind at all. I used wire wheels and some stone grinding bits. The worst spots were in the corners.

Good luck with your truck.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Well I have come to the conclution that the cab lights have got to go. I know that they are different but they don't go along with my theme. This is going to get ugly.

I also removed the heater core and cleaned up the fire wall. I had a pretty good spot of rust by the motor. I had a whole bunch of junk that had made its way through the fan and was clogging the heater core.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I made a plate for the speaker kick panel hole on the passenger side. I used fiberglass to glue it in and used a few self-tapping screws and them finished with a seam filler to fill any gaps. I've never seen anybody that had cut a hole in their cab like this.

I also need to make a plate for the inside.

I put my 22's on from my suburban--just for fun--I think they look a little big for the wheel base.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Thanks man. Yeah, those wheels are bad, they cost more than the truck. I do have some 17's that are currently on my 93 that I plan on running for a while. The tires that are on it in the picture are 265/35/22's. there's not much between me and the road, not to good for ride quality. I also don't have power brakes, each wheel weighs 38lbs + tire.

Cool truck! I'm building a longbed but not chopping it to a shortbed. Did you have rust on the back side of the windshield frame?

Mine is terrible and I'm just wondering how you fixed it.

Keep up the good work!

Chris

Thanks.
The inside of my windshild had a few spots around the top corners but other than that it wasn't too bad. If yours is bad enough you may need to weld in patch pieces, just get some wire wheels. If you have a sandblaster that would do the trick also, assuming you've removed the glass.

Good luck on your truck.

I think they look good on the truck they just make it look like a hotwheels. I may sence some jealousy from the 'burb too.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Well I guess I should update my progress. I've been mostly doing body work on the passenger side bed. There were quite a few small dent toward the back. I spent some time welding up the middle stake hole and any other holes on top of the rail. This week I've started shaving the roof lights, and still have one more left for tomorow. I'll post pics of that mess later.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

All right so I finally got the cab lights shaved. The drivers side was a little different than the passanger. I started by cutting a star pattern then flatened out the area then welded it up. I didn't like how the drivers side turned out, it was too messy. I made a small peice for the center. The center I could have made one peice, but I had no way to bend the peice so I chose to divide them into three peices. The passenger side was a lot easier. I cut a round hole and made a peice to match. I contoured it with a hammer on the cement floor.

That was a ton of work. It took me over a week, and sun up to sun down on Saturday plus most of today. Thanks to Clyde78 for stopping by. You kept the dulldroms at bay.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I also spent some time on the drives side bed while the body filler was curing.
I shaved the middle stake hole, since short beds don't have those I thought it might look off to people who know these trucks. I got most of the body work done on the drivers side bed. Here are some pics.

I think I need to get a life.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

This weekend was spent prepping the inside. I also cut my dash, don't worry the cutting was for the A/C vent. I just went out back and made a template off my suburban's A/C vents. I also shaved the gun rack holes.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I made more progress this week. I cleaned out the cab, pulled the gas tank for the last time. I undercoated first, then spray bed-liner, then gloss black. I also pulled the bed and flipped it on it's end. The supports are rotten in spots so I am going to have to cut those parts out. I guess that I lucked out seeing that the supports that I cut off are pretty solid.
