Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
I recently found a set of 305/5.0 vortec heads so I am gonna have to change the intake and carb eventually. I think that will be down the road (this summer) after I get the truck back together though. I probably should go ahead and do it now since I have the motor out and on a stand, but I just don't wanna spend the extra money right now. I wanna put an RV cam in it, so I'll probably wait to change the heads when I get the intake, carb and cam so I can do it all at once.
What you got? I will be looking for a small quadrajet.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
This is not a real truck update, but I am getting a new welder in a few days that should help move my project along.
My brother in law just bought a 72 Firebird and it needs rear quarter panels. I told him I would weld them in for him if he bought me a new welder . It will help both of us and save him a bunch of money. I was gonna get a new Hobart, but found a sweet deal on a Lincoln Electric. It's one year old and only used 3-4 times. It's a Lincoln Electric 110v Weld-Pak 3200 HD MIG for $250. I think it's gonna be great for sheet metal (gotta be better than what I have now). http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...ture/e7351.pdf

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
good deal, nice welder. that'll be good for sheet metal. i bought a new miller 140 with autoset for $680. only reason i bought it was because it is supposed to do aluminum too. can't go wrong with that sheet metal and some minor welding is right up that's alley.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
Well, called the guy back and someone had come the very next day and got the welder. Sucks! Oh well.
I got invited to a "garage cleaning party" tonight , so while I was there I decided to go ahead and burn in the gas tank delete patch (or whatever it's called). It's still got a few pinholes, but I think I can close those up. Didn't have a lot of time.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
Phipp13 made these and was/is giving them to board members for a donation to Project Underhaulin. He just made them in a circle and didn't include that tab at the bottom. Shouldn't be a problem to fill that with some metal though.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
one suggestion ....the flux core works OK , i did quarters on a 63 nova years ago and it worked fine . BUT , when i converted my lincoln weld pak 100 to gas , it was a whole different world . i promise you , if you make that jump , you wont be sorry. MUCH cleaner welds.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
Well, haven't done much lately but that's about to change. Went today and picked up this. Finally!
http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...r/im/im564.pdf I need to get a tank and regulator. After that I can finish up the rust repair and focus on getting this thing "rolling" again. Anyone know where I could pick up a small argon tank cheap?

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
At the time I bought mine Harbor freight was the cheapest. I then took it to TSC and exchanged it there. They swap them out there just like a propane tank any where else.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
Or you could get one on Ebay, empty of course. Then you could trade it at TSC or welding supply house.

Glad you found your rig. Is that one that was on Craigslist? If so, it looked like a great deal.

Yeah, third Lincoln Welder I have tried to buy on CL. Picked it up for $240. Thanks for the deal on the rear bed panel.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
that's a sweet deal. as for the tank. you will need argon/CO2 mix. probably 75%/25% being best for sheetmetal. pure argon is for stainless or aluminum. not good for carbon steel. BTW when you get it refilled, please let me know how much it is. i want to compare what i getting charged out here for it. i just filled up my 40 cube tank for $130. the 80 cube tank would have been $150 but i would have had to buy a new tank.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
well you know how it is out here. living in paradise we have the paradise tax. everything is $$$ even a gallon of milk. normal stores it's like $6-8, sams club or costco has it like $4-5. gallon gas out here is $2.50 super. the problem with shielding gas is there is only one place we can get it now that air liquide closed up. airgas is the sole distributor so we get raped... i'm just curious what you will pay for a refill.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
Bryan (5150) stopped by for a few minutes last week and helped me get the rear springs off, drop the rear axle, and take the trailing arms off. While he was here we went ahead and cut out the passenger side notch and tacked it in.
Thanks Bryan.

Re: Lucy - My 1968 SWB
Thanks. Haven't had the extra coin to get a tank yet, so I haven't used it. Look forward to it though.
