Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
I keep seeing people who have swapped out their three on the tree for something else, but I can't seem to find the parts to put mine BACK to a three on the tree!
If any of you guys have the parts to put a Saginaw three speed and column shift in my truck, let me know. I'm jonesing for a column shifted handshaker! I need everything, since mine was converted to a TH400 before I bought it. |

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
I love my three on the tree.
So fun to drive, and it reminds me of days gone by... I'm only 41, but I grew up poor and the rigs we could afford were all tired ol' tree-shift. |

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
I haven't forgotten about you for when I convert to a TH350. I have been deep in other projects recently. My truck is running and driving great with what feels like a new clutch plate. I like the 3 on the tree, but prefer an auto in the end.
I put a TH400 behind a 250 in my old truck and people we trippin like the engine was too weak to "push" that transmission. I just sat there and spun the tires haha |

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
A TH400 is a good for just about anything, and a 250 in front of it sounds like a set-it-and-forget-it scenario, if you ask me.
I'd bet you could hammer on that drivetrain until your foot wears out. Sounds like a fun set-up. |

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
I don't think I could kill a TH400 behind my little straight six if I tried. It has a shift kit in it, and will break them loose going into second. Shifts really nice, but I have always preferred a "hand shaker". Would really like to have a column shift just for nostalgia. A S10 5 speed would probably be the better choice, but I would really rather have a column shifter.

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
Just bought this. Can't remember if I posted it here. 76 C10 L6. three on the floor. Looks like its original. Swapped the old sloppy floor shifter for a Hurst Indy with the Hurst Cue Ball. washed the motor since then. Going to drop 2' & 4", restore interior, power steering. leave Patina and apply shop signs.

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
Thanks... I'm happy with it, enough to make it my daily driver.
It needs a bunch of little stuff. It has a vacuum leak I need to sort out, it needs grease on the speedo cable, God only knows the last time it got wires, cap, and rotor, and it's probably due for plugs too... the interior is pretty shabby. Motor sounds healthy, though... no rod noise or piston slap at 109k miles, and it doesn't smoke or burn oil. It's 100 percent farm truck from stem to stern, which is what I was looking for. |

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
I have owned two six bangers. a 74 with a 250/ 3-speed STD, and a 76 with the same combo. They ran well enough, but fuel misers they were not. I believe they both probably had fairly low geared diffs. I pulled the 6 out of the 74, and installed a 283 V8 out of a 65 Impala. Bolted it right to the 3-speed. Believe it or not, my fuel mileage actually increased.

Re: where are all the 6 bangers?
Question: Does the 292 six provide any significant advantage over the 250? I can't prove it from what I've read on the web... it seems like their power and torque outputs are pretty similar. Does the 292 deliver its torque lower in the rev range, maybe?

Next up, I put the gauge lens panel back in after having used a headlight restore kit to rejuvenate the plastic (it worked about 90 percent, which I will take), and I need to install the new door lock cylinders. |
