Re: Grandma's '72 Cheyenne LWB Half Ton

close! My truck has a Scholfield from Wichita Kansas dealer plate on the tailgate! Unfortunately, it took this forum for me to realize my "Sc" was missing... Up until that point, I was very happy with my "Holfield" emblem...

Re: Grandma's '72 Cheyenne LWB Half Ton

Got some more pictures today--Hope you all enjoy seeing Joel's work. But what do you think I should do about the back bumper? It came with a farm bumper painted white and I never considered taking it off, but should I replace it with a chrome one or keep the farm bumper?

Re: Grandma's '72 Cheyenne LWB Half Ton

Looks first class to me The bumper prob. depends on your preference on how you intended to restore it. Mine has had chrome. I think yours was an original option also. Personally I think it'd look good w/either.

How are they going to paint the gate letters to match the med. bronze?

Not sure, but mine had undercoating. I'd say factory done and it protected the underside of my cab (floor) well. Not so much luck with cab mounts or supports, rusted good. Had liner under the front/rear wheelhousings too.

Maybe try contacting a local dealer.

Re: Grandma's '72 Cheyenne LWB Half Ton

The undercoating was a dealership deal. My pops was working at a chevy garage in the early to mid 70s and said they had a 55 gallon drum on a cart and they would put newspaper over the drive shaft and things they didnt want coated and spray it on. To the OP, if you want to leave it, leave it. Its your truck do as you want.

Very cool Maxxd07. They (dealership) did a good job. If he wants it restored to spec, that's why he's asking. The very bottom of the tailgate should have a strip of med. bronze.

On a '72, below the woodgrain is all white. The '69-70s had a stainless molding on the bottom, and below that molding there was a small strip of color. Took a little research, but when in doubt, I call my Cheyenne guru in Texas, Paul Duncan, who's been a tremendous help during this restoration.

Hmm, ok - sorry don't recall seeing your tailgate in previous pics.

Found some info on the different styles used over the years. Jim Carter Truck Parts
Standard, Custom Deluxe and Cheyenne were different. Interesting.

Re: Grandma's '72 Cheyenne LWB Half Ton

Thanks to all who've looked through this thread and replied. It's been a VERY slow build, lots of roadblocks, project from he!!, but it's getting done the way I wanted--everything stock. Just as though it was sitting on the showroom floor in '72. And yes, Joel has an eye for detail and amazing talent. I knew this from the start since he did the restoration on my Camaro. If everything goes as planned, we'll show the truck at the Super Chevy Show in Memphis in April. It's no big block or short wheel base bed, and doesn't have all the fancy wheels or chrome, but it's what my Grandmother bought new in '72, and left to me, that counts. Even after all the problems, I'm glad I decided to restore it. Thanks guys, Casey
