Re: 1972 Cheyenne Restoration

Got the doors mounted..... it sure pays to mark the hinges (we drilled 1/8 inch holes) so when you re-install them the doors line right up !!!!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Restoration

looks great...but the white section on the drivers side below the gas cap/filler...looks smaller...doesn't go up as high and down as low as the other white sections?

optical illusion?

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Restoration

There is a minor difference... but in my defense.... I painted this truck with the bed 6 foot away from the cab... and the doors and front fenders in another booth. And don't forget... the mouldings cover all the lines !!!!!
These pictures are taken in the same paintbooth, it's just hard take a pic with both still in the same picture.

It really does look great. Glad to hear my eyes weren't fooling me...and that the small difference won't be a problem for you.

This is going to be a first class truck when finished! Love the color scheme and glad to see you are sticking with the upper and lower mouldings.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Restoration

Boy you two motivate me. Then, I remember that my son's only two years old and I have no time lately for my project. Either way, I am excited for you guys. GREAT WORK!

By the way, what type of rivits did you use for the VIN tag?

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Restoration

70LonghornCST.... You have to make time.. plus we have a deadline for this truck. Funds are tight right now so we are doing what we can afford. Just keep your eye on the prize, these projects can turn into a basket case real quick. Do one mini project at a time and progress can be seen very quickly. This is my 12th or 13th project in as many years.. so I am used to the pressure. Some for me and some for others.

The rivits are just regular 1/8 inch steel rivits with steel mandrel. I ground off the originals from the back side and saved them so I could compare them to what we have in stock at the shop. It worked out great, they look fantastic.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Restoration

If you have to have the vehicle inspected by the DMV, you may run into a problem with the VIN plate being attached without the rosette style rivets.

Nice build, very quick progress!

I will not have ANY problems with a vehicle inspection. By the DMV or the State Police. This truck did not have rosette style rivits on the VIN plate. It had plain old rivits. 1/8 short shank steel/steel. Just like the parts truck we had and like the others this year that we have checked out. I still have the old rivit heads to prove it.

I work at a Dealership bodyshop, and back in the 80's I used to replace the dashes in the Cutlass Supreme's that had radios stolen and the dash all busted up. We had to order the rosette style rivits for those cars because you couldn't get them anywhere but the manufacturer. So I know what you were thinking.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Restoration

Ok, Jon's been working for the cash to continue his build. Blueprinting the engine, installing some chrome parts, polishing the stainless mouldings....lots of good stuff.
