Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Then, I get a text late morning today....big gust of wind and the paint booth leaned over. Didn't do any damage to the truck but the plastic ripped and since the wind was on and off....we decided to move the truck inside the shop after all....so a day wasted on a booth....oh well. things happen.
Jason got a first coat of primer on everything but the new tailgate and the doors. Came by to block sand this evening. A couple spots that looked fine before primer need more attention (amazing how it shows things up) so we're going to use some "icing" (lightweight filler/putty) to get those perfect and then sand and apply one more coat of primer before paint. The truck is coming out so nice and everything else is so nice we decided to take the paint job to the next level. Took the hood off and sanded that down...had some runs in the finish that weren't going to be up to par with the build. Re-doing the fenders even though the PO had jammed them because there were some scratches from his fitting them on. And re-doing the windshield frame because of some small scratches. Here's the hood, some of the blocking tools we used, and the SPID which I'm not sure I'd posted before...

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
And the blazer in primer....got it and all the parts blocked out nicely tonight. The primer is like glass but there are those few spots we want to touch up so one more final coat after that tomorrow and then blocking one more time before sealer, paint, and clear.

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
For those that hadn't followed from the beginning, the windshield frame, dash, and firewall are all finish painted already. So the windshield was installed after the paint. We're re-painting the frame for some scratches (from the top going on/off) but just taping off the gasket since it's already painted and cleared under the gasket.

Awesome blazer i love those things. what kind of texture paint did you put underneath? Was that for rust proofing?
Thanks |

Looks like some great progress! Sorry to hear the wind won't give you a break. I need to get a few of those sanding blocks.

Thanks. Not a big deal. It's worked out fine just means my project took over his entire shop The blocks worked great for some of the body lines like the top rail and the curves/wheel arches. However, some parts it was still better for just good old hand sanding. They do make tons of other blocks but it would be too pricey to buy all of them you needed unless you did body work only full time.

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Definitely. There have been several delays including primer that kept drying in the paint gun hopper due to a bad batch in combination with the heat...but we're still pressing on.
Got all the parts with one coat of primer and block sanded. they all look great. have some small work to do that Jason used "icing" on tonight (light filler) His plan now is to have it in color and clear by Thursday at the latest. He's as ready as me to have this done as he has other projects waiting in addition to his daily flow of small jobs like timing chains, axles, pinion seals, ac compressors, etc etc... Here are some more picture of parts after sanding...

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Went through my final boxes of parts to come up with a final list (until I start final assembly and find more things I need )
Seems like I have or have ordered everything minus some weatherstrip for the top. Got it all ready to take over to the garage as soon as paint is dry/cured. I spent a little while cleaning up the visors more and also cleaned up the shift boot...it was a little dirty compared to the ring I polished up for it Both came out looking like new so I was pleased no before.... After.... here's the boot before and comparing the old ring to new.....a SLIGHT improvement.... Can't wait to see it all together

I am really looking forward to paint too Now the plan is Thursday....we'll see....he's got a lot going on right now....and I really don't want to rush it....it's such an awesome blazer the final sanding/paint has to be up to the level of the rest of the truck. Got some more final parts ordered today and hopefully will have the carpet and the weatherstrip on the way tomorrow...

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Well, no color yet...but the good news is it's getting slicker and slicker....
Jason sprayed a second coat of primer the other day, block sanded it with 320, and used "icing" lightweight filler to touch up a few areas he wasn't happy with. this stuff is very thin and fills super small variations. Here's a picture with the icing sanded down... Then he sprayed the third and final coat of primer. Then we blocked with 320, 400, and just for grins 600 I'm happy I decided to do the 600 because now the primer is SUPER smooth and actually has a reflective sheen it's so smooth. Should lead to an awesome paint job. Glad we've taken the extra time to get this thing RIGHT!!!

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
the amazing part to me is that the areas you see in the top picture looked perfect and felt perfect after the first block sanding on the first coat of primer....it wasn't until he broke out additional lights and put them at differing angles that he saw that. Probably would have looked great w/out this extra work but now it will be a really nice paint job!
