A little more progress over my vacation, between the cold and spending time with my son I didn't get much done. But, I made my wife SOOOOOOOOOOO happy, I got the wiring harness off the dining room table after two years. Attached are the pictures of it and some from the grill mods.

I cheated and bought an aftermarket harness. I didn't trust myself that the motor would run right after I hacked up the original harness up. That is even with having a copy of the factory wiring schematic. Ha ha

Thanks, I understand totally. All those wires are intimidating, I know it did me. I couldn't read a schematic at first for anything, but I said to myself...self you can do this to save 500 bucks. I have looked at the schematics for 2 years and have went through things over and over. After Brendon of LT1swap .com updated his website with all the info of what to delete I knew I could finish what I started. I have to send him my PCM to program so I'm believing it will run, hopefully to see that by the end of the month.

I like that your doing the wiring yourself. I may be weird but I get some kind of odd enjoyment out of playing with wiring... Its like a puzzle! The truck is looking great, I love what you did with the gauges, I look at them everyday in my Trans am and never would have guessed that the vital gauges would fit in two round holes, WELL DONE!

Yes she is yes you are, I washed some truck tail lights in the dish washer one time my wife went WWE Throw down on me. If I would have walked in with a wiring harness and laid it on the table WW3, the world would have ended.

Well, I've working on Fred's wiring harness. I went back the junkyard where I bought my motor and robbed some more connectors off the Z that my motor came from and another Z of it's harness cause I had cut mine up. I had some really good ideas over the holidays for the wiring on the truck. Trying to use factory plugs so I can unplug things and not have to cut the wiring. I also spent all my Christmas money on new hoses and such. I went to my muffler guy in town and he fixed me a piece for my header since my steering shaft goes through it. You can also see where I had to modify the two middle tubes for clearance. Hoping to have it running by the end of January.
Rootbeer do you have any good schematics for a 1985 S10? I have a Haynes book and ones from the Autozone website, but still am having troubles how to do the ignition hookup using the s10 harness and its steering column. |

Thank you Rootbeer, that helps me out greatly. I had a partial of this same one, but couldn't never really figure it out or remember where I got it from. I think this will get me over the hump. Just had to figure how to merge the Z underhood harness with the S10 harness ignition part. I don't want to see or smell any smoke when I turn the key.

SSR I might have something else that will help you, your using a harness from a 94 Z28 right?I should be able to get a PCM connector view that will make things a lot simpler for you, I can only get it off all-data so I will post it tomorrow.I use them to wire up a 95 350 TBI motor so they can learn how to read diagrams. Hopefully they have the same one for you car. I will say GM used a lot of the same wire colors for a lot of years in cars and trucks for the ignition switch and early 80 GM wiring diagrams SUCK!

You are right RB it's a '94 Z28. What I'm doing is using the underhood fuse block/wires from the Z since it has fan relays and fuses for injectors, o2's, fans, and ignition. The extra fuses(wires)not used like for the air pump/fog lights will be for the fuel pump and map sensor. I want to use the S10 harness for starting and everything else(except gauges which will run from the PCM/engine), the schematic you sent helps me big time. I know I have one(pink)wire from the uhfb to go the ignition switch and one(orange) wire for the ignition and one(red) wire hot at all times. The relays have there own hot wire. I'm trying to keep it as close to factory as I can. I hope this makes sense.

Well, with two days snow/ice and no chance of going to work (awe shucks) we produced some results. I got the harness for both the LT and S10 put into place, fuel pump wires ran and souldered many wires together. I may move the ECM onto the inner fender later but it is finally coming together. Look at all the purty colors....No church tonight so I will get some more done then.

Man that looks familiar, I haven't got brave enough to cut the ECM wiring yet I am still figuring out were I am going to mount it. If I get brave enough under the dash is were I would like to do it.It sure looks like you have got a lot of room between the engine and cab maybe its cause I have my front clip on.
We've had the last two days off from school, 8" inches of snow and 0/ -15 wind chills(I bet the Canadians get a laugh if they read this), Its bummin me out to keep having snow days that's more nice days in May we have to go. Joe

More accomplished this last week/weekend. Been removing wires from the s10 harness that won't be used, got the brackets on the engines finally finished/painted and bolted up for the last time. Bought new plugs /wires to replace old, then I got the nerve up to remove a valve cover and to my surprise this 120,000+ mile motor looked pretty good up top so I hope the bottom is just as good. Here'a shot of it.

Maybe this will make more sense. On the S10 schematic there is the orange wire from the switch going to the fuse box, I'm assuming that is "ignition switch"(hot in run). Then the pink wire from the switch to the coil and fuse box, I'm assuming that is "ignition"(hot in run bulb test and start). Forgive me for asking so many questions, but I sure do appreciate your help.

Awesome news on the belt.
I did get to hear my motor run, but let me tell you the Z28 it came out of was ragged and ruff. So I was very surprised to see it that clean. I think this is how my wirings gonna work. The pink wire "IGN/GAU" fuse (hot in run,bt & start)that did go to the coil will power up my injectors and pcm ignition, fuel pump and MAF. I will figure out tonight about a (hot in run) wire for o2 sensors. I think I can use the choke wire since its gone. From my underhood fuse box a (hot all times) wire will power up my pcm. I'm still in the process of figuring out the brake switch for the TCC and "if" I need the PNP from the PCM (LT1 swap says delete it). I go next week to Hawks 3rd gen to get my PCM flashed only 50 bucks. I'm getting excited!!!!! |

Let me know how it goes. Were is hawks? 50 bucks is a good price, lt1 swap is a couple hours down the road from me, 30 miles from were my mom and dad grew up. But if I could get it done for 50 I am willing. We got all the head,tail,brake and turn signals working, power seats bolted down and working. I finally gave the ok to put my wiring harness on a diet, Trim a little check and see if all is still working, trim a little more. One of my student was working on seat belt locations, mounted them temporarily were we thought would work came said; I think we have a problem with the seat belts I can get the belts buckle but I don't think a bigger guy like you will get them to buckle.Umm well he was right time for me to go on a diet.
