Re: Tunnel Ram
Did you do any pulls on a dyno with that motor and a single 4 for comparison? I will always put my money on the single 4 for all out horsepower but the cool factor is pretty high with the cross ram. Just remember readers.....there is a reason why the cross ram was short lived. You just can't out perform a correctly setup 4 barrel and intake.
wutnxt....I only wrote that so guys don't run out and try to find one for performance reasons. BTW...what's that going in? I like the inline X ram like you have over the staggered ones like the Z car had. Course then there is the mopar cross ram that puts your carbs out over your lug nuts!!! More unsuccessful engineering but worth a fortune if you find one at a garage sale!! |

Re: Tunnel Ram
Well...
I am not planning on doing a dyno pull with a single 4, it was actually on the dyno with the cross ram once before but the carbs were crap so we sent them out to be flowed and set up and they just came back Friday. From the first pulls we got the dyno guy was very impressed on how well it did so I guess we will see. This might sound a bit wierd but I am not sure if it's going into my 1969 z/28 or one of the 65 or 66 trucks . Not sure I want to put the 302 in the Camaro just yet.I do know the second cross ram I have is going on my 375 HP corvette engine thats sitting in my short box big window truck I am building. Ya I know the cross rams or more show then go but they are drop dead sexy......When I want the big power I fire up the big 1050 Holley on the Merlin and watch the fuel cell get sucked dry...... |

Re: Tunnel Ram
You mean like this??
This is a top fuel nitro pump. I'm sorry but it's just hard to believe those motors can actually process that much fuel in a 1/4 mile run!! I think I could make that work with a "regulator".....lol |

Re: Tunnel Ram
So the engine pictured above with the crossram is a 302?
I've got a polished Edelbrock XC-8 that I've been hoping to use someday. Quote:

Re: Tunnel Ram
No thats a 383 stroker with the cross ram on it abouve ....I also have a 302 "Zapper" that is the right model of engine for my camaro. Sorry for the mix up, I just ment that I was not sure at this point where that engine with have a home and that I was was rethinking putting the 302 back in my camaro.....and thinking the 383 was going into the Camaro instead.
By the way I have one of your power steering plates and it worked quick and easy....thanks |

Re: Tunnel Ram
Ok guys, i got my engine set in (mock up purposes only) with tunnel ram. The hood definitely clears the top of the carbs but now i have a new problem. The rear carb cleaner hits the firewall lip. I hate to move the engine forward because them i have move the tranny bellhousing mount as well. Thoughts? Ideas?

Re: Tunnel Ram
Build a custom air box, with differant style air cleaner that will come straight up from the air horn of the carb. or notch the lip, and finish it off with a piece of filler steel ( welded) to give it a finished look....

Re: Tunnel Ram
Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no way that hood is going to close. You are not accounting for the huge brace that runs along the back and bottom of the hood. Maybe the 60-66 are different but I don't think so. Also remember that these hoods really come forward as you are lifting them up. I couldn't believe how much room I didn't have. That's why I had to notch the brace a bunch. You also need to loose the spacers and go from there.

Re: Tunnel Ram
You are correct prostreet. Maybe some of the Edelbrock lo-profile triangle air cleaners would work?

Re: Tunnel Ram
I have my hood cut and run a 3" Fiberglass scoop on my Pro Street truck to get enough clearnace with my Big Block and my 1050 . There isn't enough room to run a stock hood..but it's really close...
Pro Street C10 First..that av your running cracks me up and all i can think is .." shake and bake" and I am not talking about Kentucky fried chicken...lol....But his hood braces are of set so that shouldn't be a problem... |

Re: Tunnel Ram
I saw this setup clear the hood on a 65 already. However, i think his engine was sitting lower in the frame rails. I am not sure mine is gonna clear after all. The big problem i am having now is hitting the firewall.
C10....I will be removing the spacers to help with this also, thanks. I'm heading out in the morning to go get those carb we talked about. Can't wait to get them. Will post pics when i get back. wutnxt.....My dad and i did the brake lines. They turned out better than we expected. Last edited by CVA59; 01-17-2011 at 11:43 PM. |

I braced my hood around the cut out portion front and back with rod and welded it all in to add strength....But ya that back brace is like atleast 3 inches wide....and I had the room to leave that portion in |

Re: Tunnel Ram
At least your linkage shouldn't change much and the top part will remain the same since the brackets that stabilize the center bar come off the carbs and not the spacers. You will need to adjust the bar coming down a bit to comp for the shorter setup but that shouldn't be a big deal.
What kind of gas pedal are you going to use? Bar or cable? The bar is super easy to hook up but a cable will require a bit more since you have to find a place/way to secure it to the intake. No real big deal though. |

Re: Tunnel Ram
I would cut and weld in a radiused notch in the upper part of the firewall for the air cleaner clearance. Once you remove the spacers, I think you could weld in a notch in the rear hood support to clear the air cleaner on the top. The hood will still look stock on the outside, and only the trained eye will know the difference looking at the underside of the hood.

Re: Tunnel Ram
Just make sure and measure 15x's and cut once. It's amazing how weak that back part of the hood gets when you start dicking with that brace. I have yet to close mine up. I got soooo excited that I just started driving it. This year is going to be some clean up work.
Oh yeah.....got my new carbs!!! |

Re: Tunnel Ram
I just saw this on youtube and noticed that.....dispite him closing the hood a extra time...it looks like his set up clears the hood brace and firewall .....maybe if you watch it a couple of times you might notice something altered or differnt?....I thought I would pass it along to see if anyone noticed anything

Re: Tunnel Ram
With all due respect... as Ricky Bobby would say...
Why run a tunnel ram on a street driven truck if you are not going to: Seems like a lot of extra money and hassle for something that is hidden most of the time, that does not enhance driveability on a street driven vehicle.1.0 have it stick through the hood? I love tunnel rams, but all this emphasis on getting it under the hood and the hood closed is making my head spin. Last edited by lakeroadster; 01-18-2011 at 11:53 AM. |
