Haha thanks. I'll keep you guys posted. I have everything together (I think) to make the swap. Just gotta get the summit order placed.
Yeah, that was me that said I have to have dad do the order stuff because I dont have my own paypal acct or anything setup for it and MO is super slow lol. Hope to have the swap done before I leave but we will see.

Re: Camshafts..
Okay,
Whats the BEST way to set valves While running tighten till quiet lol TDC zero lash plus 1/2 turn and then theres something about turn motor over till X cyl pushrods start to move then do XXXXXXXXX And how do I get engine to fire immediately? Thanks Planning on using the 10-30 penzoil and lucas for break in? General consensus says that should be OK right? Then VR1?

Re: Camshafts..
You're gonna need to do all that before it's runnin'. The setting the valves has been beat to death... Search and you'll find it.

Re: Camshafts..
Just make darn sure you have a good running carb, even if you have to borrow one, before you try and fire that thing. It must start as close to immediately as possible. You do not want to crank and crank and crank.

Re: Camshafts..
I like to do Zero, TDC & your 1/2 turn...just run through the firing order(every 90 degrees on the crank, you have 1 TDC ,comp stroke). If you do this with the intake off, you will get an idea how far this sets the pungers into the lifters(.030-.050). Lube the lobes & lifter faces real good with some good old Moly paste, & I would use the GM EOS on the break in. Set your #1 tdc comp stroke, & drop the dist, but leave it slightly loose on the clamp. You want a quick fire up & ear adjust the timing. Pull her up to 2000 rpms ,as soon as you see the oil pressure come up & run that first 20-30 minutes @ that speed....maybe buzz the throttle a few times(200-300 more rpms) to redirect the oil splash /spray. Generally after that, I shut it down, change the oil filter, fire back up & set the timing with a lite. i will then take her out for a 40-50 mile run (easy....you have time to romp on her later)

Re: Camshafts..
Well my machinest said something about keeping the intake off and watching the lifter/pushrod and when it starts to move or something.
Ive seen it a few other times on the net etc. So just do like the haynes manual says TDC set XXX # and then spin it over and do XXX #. Will I be okay with the lucas rather than EOS crazyL? (already bought the lucas). Any recomendations on BRAND of moly lube paste? (I have some thing I used on my thumpr cam left over its red and in a small sqeezebottle. I'll probably get more because I dont wanna run out. On the carb I'll be using the carb thats on it now. I was asking more along the lines of how/what to set the timing at without running it so that I know it fires up 1st try.

"And how do I get engine to fire immediately?"
If everything is good (carb, fuel delivery, ignition, electrical, compression, timing, etc...), it will want to fire immed., naturally.

Re: Camshafts..
Wahoo!
Cam came in today! I have everything except the balancer puller (gotta borrow one or rent one for $100 from parts store. Should I prime the engine for oil etc before I start it? Also got some engine assy lube today the vodoo came with a small pouch. So I have 3 pkgs of lube now. 1-Red colored assy lube in white bottle 2-engine assy lube from advance (probably return it) 3-voodoo VERY SMALL pkg of assy lube

Yes, I would definitely prime the oil pump before you fire it.

Re: Camshafts..
It needs to take as long as it takes so you do it right. Go back over your work in your mind many times. I always like to walk away and then come back and just stare at it, going over each aspect of what I did to make sure I didn't forget anything. I have caught myself forgetting simple things like power to the dizzy. What ever you do.....don't just sit there and crank and crank and crank. If it doesn't fire immediately, go back over your work. If everything is right, it's usually that the timing is too retarded.

Re: Camshafts..
When you prime the oil pump turn the engine over 2 times so that the oil flows thru each hole in crank to each bearing and thru complete engine, without turning it over only part of the engine lubes.

Leave the timing cover and intake off till you have all the rockers tightened so you can tell where you are at and not 180deg off. If you go by the book you should be good adjusting after it is running makes a hell of a mess and read the directions for the gears so the marks are lined up right, a small block is one of the easiest engines to build just take your time and ask questions if you aren’t sure. You should be able to put the engine together in a day depending on how many buddy’s stop by and how many beers are passed around. When my cousin and I were putting mine together on a hot summer day he was drinking some home made beer by the time we got the last piston I had to call it quits because they hit him hard. The next day we went over every thing just to make sure all was good and I wouldn’t let him have any more beers till we finished. ![]() When you go to start it you will have to put some gas down the carb a few times to get gas through the fuel pump and fill the carb unless you have a electric fuel pump on it. Good luck Remember every has one has an opinion on cams like they do women some like big lobes some like small lobes some like them in between but we all like them to treat us good. My 2.5 cents

Re: Camshafts..
Its not a NEW motor I plan on pulling it in the shop tearing it down and then dirving it back out of the shop.
Ok 1 more-Should I 'clean' the cam etc? I was reading the instructions and it said to clean it or something? My work has a big parts washer I can use?..What should I do thanks?
