Thanks man!

I finally got around to tinting the windows. Used a $40 kit from Autozone, its 20% both sides, vents, and back. Took around 4 hours. Also cut the glovebox down to fit. It doesn't drop down to horizontal but it opens. Thanks again Vintage Air!

Ohhhh, and I received and installed the other 55/56 V8 emblem on the DS. So far I have parts from 55, 56, 57, 58, 68, 72, and 99!!!!!

$hit, I almost forgot, I helped my buddy drag this 71 Deluxe home on Sat. Can't wait to cut that longbed down.

Thanks Kim.

So I thought I had the transmission pan leak figured out for the fourth time, turns out i was wrong, again. I have now replaced the gasket 3 times after consulting with a local transmission rebuild guy.

So far I have replaced the
1. coolant line fittings with the weird thread pitch. (fixed that leak)
2. new lokar tranny dipstick (fixed that leak)
3. new shift shaft seal (fixed that leak)
4. verified the front seal was NOT leaking.
5. gasket 3 times. First was a regular autostore cork. 2nd and 3rd were rubber with silicone.

This last one was a Mr Gasket neoprene cork combo. Trans pan was torqued to 10 ft/lbs. Meticulously cleaned the pan and straightened the pan bolt holes prior to installing.

not sure where its leaking from will look next time on the lift.

On a more positive note I scored some cool finned valve covers for $30. Also located a Quadrajet and Edelbrock RPM intake for $100, going to pick them up on Monday!!!

About forgot, out of no where this guy comes down the block and screeches to a stop in front of my house. His name was "Cash", he was high as hell. We chatted and compared notes for about 30 minutes then he said he had to go he was late for a concert. Cool guy.

Good job on the valve covers!
I wish I could find them that cheap in my area.
So what other plans do you have for the truck?
It's looking pretty pretty complete (not to mention badass )

Not to pat myself on the back, but I've done a lot of the work you were mentioning as build goals in page one. here's my thread

For what its worth, I'd go with different cross members and put the motor / trans further back than I did. It would simplify the trans cooler / fan installation. Also - your biggest issue with an LS in the '57 is the oil sump clearing the axle & steering.

Thanks man! I may have to upgrade to a twin master cylinder before long. This single is always on my mind. The next big project will be IFS front, probably in a couple years. Then I want to do a 4.8 or a 5.3L engine swap.

Re: New member, old 57 3100

Some before and after $130. Learned alot about Quadrajets today!! Runs much better even with a rough tune on it. Also threw in a remote starter solenoid due to some hot start issues.

Some good Quadrajet information, if its not here you probably don't need it.

Re: New member, old 57 3100

Nice to know there are headers out there that actually fit a lowered solid axle with factory steering. Did ou run your exhaust pipes below your tranny cross member? Or were they bent and routed above it?.

Re: New member, old 57 3100

How close are they to the steering box? I tried a few sets that were supposed to fit, but they hit. Ended up with a set of cheap block huggers, which I really did not like very much.

I think the quadrajet carb is one of the best carbs made. A lot of people didn't like them , I think because they didn't understand them.

Tim, from the header collector I used some bends to hug just under crossmember behind the engine. From there they angle upward and go beneath the tranny crossmember as well.

They are very close to the steering box. I had to offset the engine about 1" to the passenger side of the engine bay.

I am a total carb newbie. I didn't tear this carb apart before installing because the guy said it was recently rebuilt. What I didn't know is that he meant it was commercially rebuilt which is not such a good thing. I have the truck running but its not right.
The divorced choke rod was missing so i had to make my own. The choke seems to work but I think the idle circuit needs some attention. For some reason the main idle screw is almost fully screwed in which I believe can cause the idle circuit to not be utilized.
More research required.....

Re: New member, old 57 3100

Good for you learning carbs - you're a braver man than I. A big part of my LS swap motivation was so I didn't have to learn anything new. MPFI, born & raised, over here.
I really like how clean the engine compartment is, too. Hard to accomplish with an LS

Re: New member, old 57 3100

Most problems I found with the q jet is people use the wrong base gasket let the engine idle and squirt wd 40rty at the base of the carb, If the idle changes you have a problem with the base gasket or the thro shaft is worn out. You have 2 air mixture screwes at the bottom flange to adjust.

Wow, thats ironic. I just replaced all the plug wires and tried to adjust some more. Found that when I wiggled the throttle shaft up and down the idle jumps around ALOT! Once I found the vacuum leak I could get it to come and go by moving the shaft back and forth.

Looks like this might be a cheap fix instead of the expensive bushing kits online.

Re: New member, old 57 3100

Just noticed my engine temps went from ~220* with the previous cast manifold and 2bbl carb to ~190 with the Edelbrock, poorly running (I think lean) Quadrajet and new plug wires.

This is a drop of over 30 degrees!!! Timing is the same, same plugs, same radiator fluid, same driving roads, similar ambient outside temps. I wonder if the old 2bbl was running way leaner that the currently piss poor running Quadrajet?

I know I have a bad throttle shaft vacuum leak at the moment. i would assume this would cause a lean condition. Once off idle the carb runs better but not great. I can hear some slight popping through the exhaust which I believe would indicate a rich condition??..

I found the 11/32" seamless brass tubing at a local hobby shop, just need to decide on a rebuild kit. Any suggestions? Or should I just fix the throttle shaft leak and go from there?

What about Cliffs rebuild kits? Are they worth the extra dough?

Re: New member, old 57 3100

Great news with the temp!

I'd say fix the leak and go from there.
Opening up a Q-jet can be.....fun. (Quite frustrating to be honest, if you done it before.)
I've rebuilt Rochester "B" carbs, 2GC's, and a couple holley. The quadrajet seemed to be the most involved.

As for kits, I don't see anything that justifies $50 for Cliff's over the $17 kit at Oreilly.
But do buy a couple cans of carb and choke cleaner. I couldn't believe the kind of gunk and crap I found in the fuel bowl.

I bought some stuff from Cliff, good guy. He has ethanol resistant accelerator pumps, which is very important.

Re: New member, old 57 3100

The main problem with qjets is the float , so change it along with the kit.
I have found in the past a lot of problems with reman carbs you get from part houses.I would never use one. Parts missing, wrong parts in the carb, wrong carb for the application. When they are built right they are one of the best carbs. esp the older ones built in the 60s.

Re: New member, old 57 3100

rebuilt the carb to include installing new primary and secondary throttle shaft bushings. Its a pretty easy fix. I was worried about drilling the baseplate for the bushings but everything went fine. Took some time to ream (read sand) the bushings to fit the shafts but nothing overly complicated.

The truck runs excellent! I mean this thing gets it. If I am going 40mph and stomp on it the tranny kicks down to second and its off to the races!! Need some better brakes now....

Still trying to fix a small idle adjustment problem here if anyone cares to take a crack at it.

Next things to do are
1. get better brakes
2. install my bed floor
3. install the passenger side seat belt
4. fix the door locks
5. install the stereo in the dash
