Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

the PO of my truck did.....ummmm, well he.. oh crap! It was 24 years ago and I cant remember what he did or didnt do. this truck is about as 180 from when I got it than any ive ever owned before.

one thing you fellas need to cling to...over time, the disdain you have for these PO will subside...besides, would the knowledge of these things ( and some of yall knew at purchase) have changed your mind about the purchase? price?

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

Previous owner was my grandpa and he bought it new in 1965. He didn't do anything but drive it. Since I bought it, I have no one to blame but myself for half-adzed work. It was budget driven, high school kid, and little knowledge. Ahhhh, the fun I'm having now fixing my own short comings from then.

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

Thank you to the person that started this thread. We do need a place to vent about POs. I am not going to go through all of the details, feel like I would fill up a couple of pages. Here is my list of head scratchers:

Instead of just using the front motor mounts on the 350 just bolted in he flipped them upside down and welded them in place. He also put a 283 intake on a 350 motor and for the inner bolts on the intake where they did not line up, he put on fender washers to hold them down. Rounding out the master cylinder holes to put in the wrong one.

He also said there was new metal in the floor boards. What was there was galvanized air duct metal held in with roofing paper and roofing shingles Cut off front door pillar and rear cab to put in an outer rocker and attached it with bondo.

I will join in here and say, I wish the PO would have used his head a little better and not drilled holes all over the place.

There is not one thing that I can think of that I cannot mount in the cab or under the hood of my truck that requires boring holes all over. All it takes is a little thought.

I don't hate the previous owner. In fact I still am grateful after twenty three years of asking that he kept his word and when he did decide to sell, that I was first in line to buy it. I just wish he'd have decided to sell earlier. It was a lot better shape twenty three years ago...

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

I get frustrated when doing the metal work. I knew my truck needed rockers and cab corners. That's not a problem. I just hate finding spots that could have easily been fixed, but instead have filler that's 1/4 inch or thicker. Maybe they didn't know how to fix it. Or, maybe they just didn't care enough to actually fix it. Oh well, more work for me. Lol

Previous Owner hacked out the engine rear cross member for dual exhaust.

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

I appreciate the PO of my truck for keeping it road worthy for as long as he did. Once they get off the road for a long time most of them don't come back, and he put the effort into keeping her going as best he could. He did a lot of wonky things along the way, but then so have I.

When they "rebuilt" the engine they put the Pistons/Rods in the wrong cylinders... #1 Rod in #5 Cylinder.

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

I was rebuilding a carb last night in the garage when i spied the old Q jet off ol'blue.. It never ran right from the start and I didn't want to mess with it then so I swapped it to what I had on the shelf .. I though I might as well fix it since i was at it so I took it apart to find they used the wrong gasket for the cover to main body ..I can see how it happened because I picked up a kit for it and it was the same wrong gasket , one of the numbers on the side is not clear and when i substituted an 8 for the zero the right kit came up ...

Ditto from my PO but they cut it off clean. I was a house framer in a past job and I think a plumber owned this truck before. Structure just gets in the way of plumbing.

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

Here are some pictures. of fun stuff from the. I have to admit. It just makes the repairing a bit more uhhmm fun. Decided I need a new cab. Too much work for the $$$ difference. The trans cross member is one of my favorite things along with the motor mounts. $5 a piece for new mounts and this is what is in there?

Bed and front clip look good. Frame is well fixable. I have to admit the little 283 sounds great and the rear end has made it all of the 5 miles I have driven it so far. Got it running after 2 months of hit and miss times to work on her. I dig the wheels and tires on this truck. That and the 283 short bed step-side were the deal closer's for me.

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

I hate that the PO used a dent puller and a slide hammer to pull out dents - in the fenders - and just hammered on them a couple of times, figured it was too much work, and mudded the crap out of the fenders, right over the dent puller studs.

I wish the PO(my dad) and his PO (my grandpa) would have at least tried to do something about the body cancer: above the doors on the inside of the cab, the drip rail, and numerous other places that are pretty common.

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

Some PO hacked out the back of the cab and the front of the coach to make a crawl space between the 2 areas. Exposing the whole area to the outside.

My po had a "custom" choke cable. A lawn mower throttle cable with the rabbit and turtle plate still on it...nice.

I just discovered I hate the previous owner because they "fixed" the rust in the frame I have been planning to use, with body filler!

I hate the po before the po that drove the crap outta my truck...dented it up in the strangest places..and pulled parts that shouldn't have been pulled...and poorly maintained the engine. I do love that he left the gun racks on though...

PO at least they patched the floor with sheet metal and rivets, although looking from the bottom side it looked as if they had literally used an ax, the speaker holes in the doors are jagged bent panels, I just got two trashed doors for the panel replacement and a sheet of cold rolled 18 gauge sheet steel for the floor. When I go back to a crash box I`ll do the floor.

Re: I hate some previous owner because.....

My complaint when the PO (my grandpa) got my '65 GMC from the original owner (my great grandpa) and swapped in a small block he didn't bypass the external voltage regulator which led me on a long goose chase over the last two years trying to figure out why my truck wasn't charging. I've had the truck since I was 12 which is almost 20 years now and I'm fixing some of the stuff that I did that I thought were good upgrades. Like an 86 frame swap. Just picked up a 1965 Chevy frame to swap under it.

Some PO on my '64 Short Step decided that epoxy was the best way to keep those pesky door handles and window cranks tight - jeez what a mess :-(

I'm trying to figure out how to get them off w/o bending or ruining anything
