Re: Project "Booger"

Update: I decided this week I had to start some sort of reassembly since boogers parts were now occupying my garage, the shed, and a spare room in my house. So may pieces, bags, boxes, nuts, bolts and whatever else I was starting to feel like I was losing control

Operation Clear Space

One of the big things that was taking up space in my garage floor was the Motor and Trans. It was fun to sit and talk to your buddies about, all shiny on the floor but it either needed to become a coffee table with a clear glass top (hmmm..not a bad idea) or get situated in its new home. I really didnt want to put the motor back in quite this soon but I need that floor space. Here is a pic shortly after my brother and I dropped it in:

After I got the motor/trans in it was time to start hooking it back up. I installed the power steering pump, but when I got to the alternator I realized those tall vc's my wife likes so much are already starting to cause me an issue:

The alternator wont adjust far enough out so I've been shopping for an alternative. I've been looking at the Alan Grove Components brackets but I welcome anyones opinion on which way I should go.

I got the distributor dropped in, engine harness installed, trans cooler lines run, and the other fun things involved in doing a swap.

Ok lets see I freed up the space on the floor where the engine was, and remember my newly rebuilt/balanced drive shaft was laying someplace so I figured that would be the next thing to go on.

Went in the shed to see what I could get out of there and right in the door was a big white box from LMC with the exhaust I had ordered from them long ago. I dont know how many of you have installed this exhaust but for me it was a challenge. I dont know if it was the scotch, or the lousy directions (why even include them as they appear to be done by a 3 year old) but it took me about 2 hours of wiggling, tightening, loosening, swapping pipes, and wiggling some more before I realized I had the hangers in the wrong spot. After swapping the two hangers around everything kind of fell into place. Here is the finished product:

They seem a little long at the tailpipe but I'll wait till I have the bed back on to tighten everything down and cut as needed.

For some time now I had been delaying fixing the cb antenna hole in the roof mainly due to my being a little scared to start welding on the roof. I had practiced a bit on my old panels and I figured i was ready to give it a go. All I got was a before and after pic but you didnt need to see my crappy welds anyway..LOL Heres the before and after:

Did some other body work on other dents and wavy spots though out the cab and my son decided to come up for air from his video game and lend me a hand which made me very proud

He got the interior scuffed and almost ready for some paint. Some minor stuff remaining and we'll be shooting some primer.

Speaking of primer..When forum member oilyrag was over to pick up boogers old engine I had mentioned I was looking for some rally wheels and he said he'd be willing to swap the ones off of his brave or crazy project if I wanted since he wouldnt be using them and that he'd be willing to share his painting experience with me. Since I still had booger on jack stands now was the perfect time. I contacted him and my son and I threw boogers old shoes in the truck and headed to Tucson on Sunday morning.

All I have to say is the guy is brave for sure. That project he's working on is not for the timid. Oilyrag has more knowledge of these trucks than I'll probably ever have and he's a great guy to boot! We finished up our painting lesson, got our rims swapped, and we headed home hopefully leaving him enough time to get something done with his Sunday. Heres the rims:

Overall I managed to throw away 5 boxes, a bunch of ziplock bags, got a motor off my floor, got the truck that much closer to being on the road, and spent time with my son and another board member...It was a successful weekend!

Re: Project "Booger"

Woo woo progress! Feels good! On the front drive, I'd take a look at the local pick and pull. Any front drive off a 90's v8 or 4.3 v6 is a full serp setup. Research it, it's not a bad alternative. Know that it takes a reverse rotation waterpump. I stripped everything off a 95 Blazer and took a lot of pics. No AC? No problem, they sell a bypass pulley. I think Hot rod mag just did a great writeup on this deal in a recent issue. Also, a 70's PU alt bracket pushes the alt forward and should clear. It's what we're running and clears our Edelbrock cast VC's no problem. Can be seen here-

Very sucsessful I'd say! Something I've learned..... play with your gun and materials on something easy to sand before you jump in that cab! Like an idiot I shot i big-fat orange peel coat in there after I had detailed it out perfect. I got to do that again! Looking good man and I'm sure there's another arrangement for that alternator out there that'll clear those covers.

I thought about a serp still researching. Im in southern AZ so I gotta have AC an AC truck. In my chat with Oilyrag80 yesterday and after researching last night I know I want to convert to a Sanden compressor andwas thinking of these brackets?

Seem to stick up awful high though.

I wish I could say I've accomplished great feats but due to Uncle Sam wanting his share of my income, ridiculously high registration on my other truck, and property taxes being due by March 1st I had to tighten my expenditures till I have a full picture of the damages. Had to hold off on the new shoes for the rims I got from Oilyrag since I didnt absolutely need them yet too. On top of everything its been damn cold!

That said I've been working on the parts that are bought and paid for that can be worked on inside the garage with the door closed. I got the rims from Oilyrag cleaned up, primed, and shot with a satin black. Got the inner fenders cleaned up..Thought I was done with old undercoating but man they were full of it! Anyway they got cleaned, sanded and shot in black. Radiator core support is now cleaned up and ready for paint too just havent gotten to it yet.

Last night I got the plug wires ran and was going to wire up the electric choke on the edelbrock, where is everyone hooking this up? I know I know search function I got a little sidetracked due to a hole I found when running the plug wires which I posted in another thread that I think I got figured out...Heres what I was looking at just above the oil filter:

Stopped in at Dons Hot Rods as recommended by oilyrag last weekend and ordered my Alan Grove brackets for the alternator and ac compressor which shot my play money for the week but I should be able to button up the engine bay this weekend fingers crossed.

Other than that I got a gallon of primer sitting here just waiting to be sprayed on something but I've been waiting on the weather to warm up a bit. Looks like this weekend it'll be a go. Still need to invest in a bigger compressor but I can practice with the little guy I got. I should know by the end of the week how much more Uncle Sam wants which will determine if this truck gets back on the road in a month or two or mid summer..LOL

I'll try and get some pics of the progress!

Re: Project "Booger"

See, I knew you hadn't thrown in the towel just yet! Looking forward to some pics. Elco's right on the money about the hole in the block. As for the choke, I think the proper place to land that would be in the heater blower circuit. Orange wire I think (I'll check). You need a keyed source. Now, the cool way to do it would be to use an oil pressure switch so that chokey is only pulling off when the engine is running, not just ignition on. I had a GMPP number for one but it's discontinued. I'll see what I can find there too.

Re: Project "Booger"

Confirmed that it is the orange wire for heater blower that you'd want to use for a simple hook up. That's how did the one in the Crummy. Here's an oil pressure switch you could use as well if you wanted.

Thank you sir! Guessing I could just install that oil pressure choke switch in the hole just below the one I was worried about in the pic above? Seems like a great idea! Orange wire was an easy find..Now to fish it though the firewall.

Re: Project "Booger"

That is a good port to use and there's also one in the top of the block near the distributor. Do you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge in the cluster?

Re: Project "Booger"

Well another week has passed and I made some progress although it was mostly "Free" or things already purchased stuff. But free is good! I spent a little time detailing and painting the front inner fenders and core. Here is an in process pic:

Remember those brackets I ordered for the alternator/AC compressor? Well I called on Thursday to check if they had come in and after talking to two different people they had no idea who I was? Not sure what happened but I checked where else I could get the brackets from and guess who had them...Amazon. With the free two day shipping I had them on my door step the next morning cuz they shipped out of phoenix.

You can kinda see the bracket in this pic:

Im sure from the pic you can also see my son and I got the core support, inner fenders, front wiring harnesses, fuel lines, speedo cable, oil, power steering fluid, trans fluid, and a bunch of other misc stuff accomplished. Well maybe you cant see all that stuff but its there! Watching your son get involved makes a poppa proud:

Ol boog is starting to look pretty sexy from the firewall forward!

When It came time to install the American Eagle radiator I ran into trouble. The radiator is about 3/4'" too tall to sit in the "pocket" like the stock one did. I played with it for several hours but there is just no way to make this thing work without quite a bit of screwing around. Havent decided if I will spend any more time on it or attempt to send it back. Im beginning to see how I got a 4 core aluminum radiator (it really is beautiful), fan shroud, and dual 14" electric fans with wiring for 400 bucks. Gotta be a way to make this work.

During the wiring I still had this silver thing on the firewall and wire running from above the fuse panel to it. I seem to remember it attaching to something silver that was attached to the carb on the old motor but can't seem to dig up a pic. Something for AC? Anyone know what the hell this does or if I even need it anymore?

Finally, we finished up "operation clear space" and started "operation make neighbors happy". Saturday afternoon we had four adult males, three of which were sipping scotch and drinking suds and I thought Good time to get that bed back on With four guys it went on easy...

Here is how ol boog ended the weekend:

Yep old boog still doesnt have shoes. Later today maybe? Stay tuned.

Re: Project "Booger"

Ol booger is officially rolling on some new shoes. Couldnt resist the look of the BF Goodrich Radial T/A's. What do you think?

I like the stance in the front but the rear needs to come down a couple of inches. Whats the best way to accomplish this? Lowering blocks or just some new springs? I think the springs all the way around are a little saggy. Opinions appreciated!

Re: Project "Booger"

blocks in the back is easiest. order bolts at the same time if you have the og setup. Cut bolts at axle, fish out pieces, insert blocks, slap back together. cinch down with BIG breaker bar or tq wrench. Last is important, you have to stretch the bolts a bit. If you just smack 'em with an impact it won't stay. 'Ol Boog looks good!

Thanks for the reply..Figured blocks would do it. Does someone like DJM make a kit for doing this or does everyone just piece it together? Thanks again!

I made my own out of 1/2"x2x7" alum bar stock. 4 1/2" centers, 3/4"+1/32 holes if I remember correctly. I wanted it to be adjustable, so I made enough for a 2" drop total. Any local spring shop can make the ubolts for around $15 ea. There's also a guy on here in ohio/indiana I think that sells a kit for around $70. Yup, Way2lo2 is the guy. $74.95. Don't be afraid to whack a coil in front as well. Doesn't usually cause much problem. That's a good time to fab up the rear shock bracket as well. I think I put the link in Yeller's thread. Stands 'em up and makes 'em work much better! For $20 in steel and bolts, big difference! Here 'tis- good thread all-round.

Beyond 2", I would do a spring. Doesn't cost much, easy to do, and better clearance.
