Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I think it should run fine on 87 but i might run 91 anyways. I am sure it will run better that way. Yeah now i am trying to get up to speed on the idle relearn deal. Gotta get my injector problem squared away first though i guess. I am thinking it is partly clogged or something. It lets the smallest bit of fuel out but nowhere near what the passenger head is doing. At idle i am guessing there should be a steady stream of fuel from both injectors? I have a video of it running and showing the injector output. Just dont know how to post it up here.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

It will run good when you get everything set up! The relearn is not a problem you just have to take out the ECM fuse for about 5 minutes. Do you still have the water temp sensor on the front of the intake hooked up and grounded?

Yep. The water temp sensor is in the front center water jacket. Its actually dead center of the intake manifold. Pretty sure its grounded well. The temp gauge in the truck seemed to be reading. I let it run for about 8-10 minutes or so and it got up to about 150 or so then i cut the truck off.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Its pretty much only getting fuel from one injector and it was still running pretty damn good. Loud as crap with the open headers. LOL. I am sure running it without an o2 sensor is giving it some shock along with the open headers.

There are two sensors, the one on the intake is for the ECM and the other is for the water temp gauge.

sent you a PM.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Oh yeah. Duh. Yeah i have that one installed on the drivers side head. Its a single wire temp sensor. I have the wire routed with my spark plug wires to keep it off the header.

Without the O2 sensor it will not idle well after warm either. Do you have a place on the header to put the sensor?

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I converted to a serpentine belt and did notice one thing. The belt tensioner was bouncing. I am guessing this means the belt isnt quite the right length??? Or did i get a bad tensioner?

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I do. I am going to have the exhaust shop weld on a bung in the collector and i have it wired up for a pre heated o2 sensor. Have the sensor as well. Was told to leave it out for now though because it would throw off the air to fuel ratio and likely foul out the plugs. Once i get it running right i will drive it down to the exhaust shop to get the exhaust put on.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Yep, just went and fired it right up. I still have to give it gas to get it to fire up but it idled perfectly this time. I cycled through the gears on the 700r4. None of them would engage. I though i remembered reading a little while back that i may have to cycle through the gears a little bit to get it to work? It was freshly overhauled as well. First time it has been run as well. Have 2 gallons of tranny fluid in it and will be adding in another gallon tomorrow as its running. It has a deep derale pan and additional oil cooler.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Probably not enough fluid in the tranny to make it move. The torque converter holds a bunch as does a deep pan and the lines to the cooler, etc. I'd add some fluid until it reads full and then try again.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Good point. I will add in another gallon tomorrow. That should fill it up exactly. The guy who overhauled the tranny told me to add the fluid slowly. Add the first then the rest after it ran for a little but.

Flex plate is bolted to torque converter I presume.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Yep. I actually had the transmission shop hook up the tranny to the motor while it was in the crate so I wouldn't have to do all of that. Lol.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Make sure to check the lines for leaks. Also adjust the TV cable, if it is not right can burn up the trans pretty quickly.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Will do. So far all lines check out good with no leaks. The trans shop is about 3 minutes away. Driving it straight there to have it adjusted by them to maintain the warranty. Lol

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

Sodell, good call on the warm idle problem. After cooled down, fired up again and idled great. Still pretty to turn over tho. Gotta press the gas pedal a few times to get it to fire off.

Glad you got it running, interested to see how it runs with the 383 and the chip.

Me too! Heard a lot of horror stories with trying to build a high horsepower tbi. Hoping for good results here. Brian at Harris Performance really helped me lay out the blueprint on what all I needed to address. He is awesome to work with.

Re: New motor won't crank, don't know what else to do

I just read earlier in this thread you have adjusted the fuel pressure to 18 lbs? That's is way to high, TBI set ups don't like very much over 10-13, you should adjust it in 1/2 lbs increments.

TBI is not like modern injection as far as fuel pressures.
