Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks BO...
I'll try that tomorrow...hadn't thought about doing one wire at a time and see what happens....

They sorta worked before and that amazed me for it being 60+ yrs old...
From my searching , P is park mode...but I could never find anything indicating what the A and F were for...i know hi and lo but not which wire does what...
the new switch is self explaining the way its marked...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

NP. I took a stab at the speeds based off where the voltage readings where. I just looked and my 57 chevy manual skipped the wiper section. Go figure. I will look around and see if I can find another old chevy manual or my Mack manual. I think I can figure it out from there. Now the question is where did I stick them. Unfortunately we are dealing with wiring that hasn't been done that way for 50 years. I bet we can find a cole hearse switch that will work though.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I was looking at cole hersee on their site and saw this...
http://colehersee.com.au/switches/rotary-switches/
most all the other switches on the truck are cole...
the new switch I have is a aupro Part # GH-1112-71

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

1st off let me thank all that helped with the wiper switch, thru replys and pms..
I did as BO suggested and tried one wire at a time with the old switch..
Glory be...everything worked just as it should...
The park position worked.
Hi speed works..
Lo speed works...but only if A and F are both connected..
So I hooked up all 3 wires and ran the switch thru all the positions...everything worked..
Better than it did before teardown..
Maybe the cleaning I've given everything did some good..
So I'll be using the old orig switch afterall..
On a side note , the new switch only had off and high speed...no lo or park...so it wont work..
Heres the diagram with the switch position and what they do...and I verified the voltage readings while it was running....still not sure how the lo spd works with A and F both having 12v..but it works.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Now that I know everything is in working order, I decided to take apart and clean the drive gears and contacts...everything looks good on the inside, but was nasty,,

and there was 2 big globs of a greasy like substance sitting on top of the brass contact plate along with some grit and dirt...I sprayed it all down with electric contact cleaner....I'm pretty sure the grease is some type of dielectric grease...but it looks like axle grease...it is over 60yrs old after all....do I need to put more dielectric on the plate before I put it back together?...

I put a touch of lithium grease on the shaft where it passes thru the housing...the worm gear is metal and the worm wheel is plastic so I assume it doesnt need any lube on it...I did clean all the dirt and grease out of the teeth...
So do I need grease?
Pics of the Inside...red circles are where the balls of grease were..
Pics of the grease also..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I would put a little grease on the gear teeth. Maybe a little dielectric on the contacts.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Yes I would put some dielectric compound on there if you have some. I am glad that it is all working for you. I got tied up yesterday and didn't have a chance to dig for my older manuals.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Put the wiper motor back together..added the dielectric grease to it..so it should be good to go..

...they finally got us some help on the off shift at work so that should help ease up on the overtime some...thank goodness..This was my long weekend off from work....But I spent the whole weekend doing mostly notruck stuff...its just so dang hot/humid...miserable i tell ya..
Still got a little more wiring done though...i needed to put the front end together so I could route the headlight/turn signal wiring in and around the various places it goes...so I grabbed a pic of it in place...hopefully this wont have to come back off..

Love the way this is coming along - it’s going to be a very sweet truck! Awesome job Greg!

Looking good!

I hear you on the hot/humid! The folks that don’t get the 95/95 days just cannot appreciate how miserable it is to try and do anything during the heat of the day.

Oh, I appreciate it all right! I lived in Virginia and Alabama as a kid and then Virginia again a few years back - that’s why I live in Colorado At 6500’ now! no such thing as humidity here!

Thanks 67c and Scott....its amazing at how fast your energy level can go from wide open to 0....
Somebody else told me the humidity in Colorado was about 8%...that would be unreal...

The annual average humidity is 37%. In the summer like now it's in the 60% range, in the winter months it gets down in the 20% range or lower and we run humidifiers to add moisture and try to keep it up around 35-40% indoors. Otherwise you get too much static electricity and anything wooden gets too dry, shrinks and cracks, not to mention your skin gets dry, chapped and cracked. Some humidity is a good thing, but you can keep the 95% levels to yourself!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Your work on that truck is awesome. The truck is looking great. Very thought out.

You are right about the heat, when it gets that hot and humid, sit in the shade and you can survive in shorts and a t-shirt. Try that when its freezing outside.

When I diseasembled the truck I saved all the little clips and things...plan was to clean and paint and reuse them...these clips were used to hold the brake/tail light wiring to the frame and also the fuel line to the frame...while doing the wiring I got the clips out to beadblast and got to wondering if I could just find new ones...well they still make them...they're called push on wire clips...I got these from wire depot, but theyre all over Ebay and other places...I got 3 sizes small, med ,large,,,,I doubt I'll use the small ones but who knows..I may find a use for them..
The clips in the bottom of the pic were used to hold the wiring to the inner fenders,...I'm not using those again ,as im running the wiring in the least visible spots I have....

I also picked up these terminal strips...rated at 600v 25a...I figured these would be good for all my switch on and ground connections...i like the barrier strips and that they're covered also...
