72C20 - Yeah, but as my wife says: At least I don't have to go from bar to bar looking for you. I know right where you are when you disappear.

KMC3420 - I would like to know more about the patch panels. I need to do this exact same repair only my truck and was looking at it over the weekend trying to come up with a plan.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Removed about 3/8" of body filler on the corner of my hood only to find poorly repaired previous damage. The bondo sculptor was not very good as the corner was way different than the other side. So, I opened her up to get some of the metal back to normal. Notice the single vertical cut and how far it opened up to get the metal close to where it belongs. Any suggestions on making a (compound curve) patch panel? A patch panel would sure come in handy if any has one available.

I would make 3 maybe 4 small pieces which would be easier than trying to do that complicated form all in one piece. Tack them together and work with them until you are close enough to hammer and dolly and get by with just a skim coat of filler. Make cardboard templates from the good side for a guide.

Put the first coat of black paint on the steering wheel I'm restoring. This is my first attempt at making a part as smooth as possible before paint is applied and so far it is coming out pretty good.

I started out by cutting out the old to use as a template and then measured the template. From there I put my measurements on a flat piece of sheet metal. I use a bender I made for my shop press to bend up to 90 degrees. For cutting I use my right and left hand tin snips. Just take it nice and slow and sneak up on your final fitment.

New key and tumbler for old blue.
The other key could come out and be turned off with anything and occasionally didn't need a key at all.

KMC3420,
Nice, thanks for that information and the photos. I think I may have everything in my shop to build one of those breaks for my press except the black iron Tee. Like I need an excuse to go to the hardware store!

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Thanks guys, it works pretty good for simply bending sheet metal, intended job. I often see attachments for a press (online), and gotta at least try to make the online $100 part for $10 worth of scrap metal and some welding wire.

If only the repro parts vendors would try something similar.

You got it! Wouldn't that be something, if successful they could dominate the market..

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Drove it across the state for the long holiday weekend. 250 miles in the 90+ degree heat, 75 mph air conditioning, and had to stop for gas twice. That's leaving home with a full tank too. So two tanks, and then a little more to get me the 250 miles.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

It’s time to put the engine in my ‘71. I pulled the driveshaft and greased the Ujoints, painted the inner fenders, core support, hood hinges, etc.
Got the engine and trans lowered into place and bolted up. Got all the exhaust bolts wire brushed and found the half moon tangs the go on the exhaust bolts and cleaned them up too. New exhaust manifold gaskets, I spaced getting new heater hose so I need to go grab that. I’m sure I’ll find some more things missing but hoping to hook the wires all up and light the fire on Saturday.
It’ll be fun- I got the truck with no engine so I’ve not driven it yet.

In the daylight it looks like it could use a shampooing- but still well worth the price paid!

Edit- oops, put this in the wrong thread. Anyway, this is a freebie seat I got last night.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Finished up the inner lower cowl repair. Got to as much bare metal as possible, had to use a little rust convertor, then hit the whole section with Eastwood Platinum Encapsulator. Hopefully that helps seal up the metal and seams/welds. Nothing like learning to weld and a lot of rust repair! At least the ugliness of lessons learned are hidden!
