Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

WOW!
I was chatting with a friend yesterday and he was wanting to do a 67-72
tahoe like i started 10 years ago and lost the drive to finish.

Then he stumbled on this site and pointed me to your build

I have to say man your build is amazing......im truely JEALOUS!
mine had a chevy caprice frame at one time had 22 inch chrome
astros supremes which were one off's

As you can see it had the start of the 4th door which was super easy
to do all the markings were there to use as guidelines.
and i just used a right side truck door for the workings.

Mine was pretty rough when i gave up. yours is amazing. great job.
i have been been doing custom cars and trucks for 20 plus years.
for you just doing it outta your garage you have done a great job.

here is mine.

also here are some other stuff ive built

i look forward to seeing yours done.

Haha nice! Wonder where it ended up..? Yours is about the 5th one I've seen started. Glad you like the build. The suicide pillarless 4th door took some extra head-scratching (can't run two hinges due to the Tahoe wheel well moved forward). But it'll be worth it. Can't wait to get back on it!

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Hey FF, just wanted to say great job! You are truly skilled and a great innovator! I am not big on lowered customs but I appreciate someone going out and building a one off truck! I do like your all one piece rear gate. I just got my rust free upper hatch from California and I am restoring my daily driver 72 K20 sub. I would like to try and duplicate your rear hatch idea. I have a few questions though. Did you end up welding all the way across the outside gap of the upper and lower overlap or did you just use your 1/4" strapping too tie the two together? also did you just use the tailgate latch with the push button to hold the hatch shut? How well does it latch that way? Does the door bounce or rattle and does it seal tight? There just seems to be some pics missing from the original mock up to later when it is done. Also was wondering how you came up with the location for your gas struts? I don't plan on doing the custom hinge you used although that does eliminate the number one way water gets into our upper hatches and rust them out. That is a great setup you came up with. Keep up the great work and thanks for all the great pics and info great roll model for having a solid well thought out plan and executing it!

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Thank you sir! Answers to your questions:
  • I did not weld across the seam yet because I have a truck tailgate skin I will be using along with modified truck taillight sections. The 1/4" bars provide 90% of the structural rigidity.
  • I came up with the strut placement based on extended and compressed lengths of the struts (~2003 yukon/tahoe/burb struts), along with some trial and error. The original set-up with the stock hinges worked great.
  • I did use the original tailgate latches and center button; no issues, seals just as tight as it ever did.

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

So this one and LFD's are there any other builds out there for people doin Tahoes?
I wanna do one!!
It has been itchin at me lately. I wanna take a Drewskin approch to my build, I want to find a late 90s early 2000's Tahoe, and find a 'Burb and cut it down and make it as if Chevrolet did it back when. A swb three door with modern power. Pondering, pondering....
