Painting it would be my sugestion as well! Not that it matters, but I'm using a '91 GMC Suburban grill on mine with the billet grill insert in the center. Its going to be painted as well because of the over bling factor.

Re: My 86 build

I love the phantom grills. They're probably the first thing I buy for all of my squares... lol. Just use plasti-dip on the grill! Then it doesn't need to be permanent and it'll give a nice flat black look.

Re: My 86 build

I was very tempted to start tearing the front end apart and install the control arms this weekend, but I want to paint the frame and clean the crossmember up before I do that so I'll have to wait for a warmer day, which may be a few months away.....

Re: My 86 build

Wicked job so far. My first truck was an 86 long box man I miss that truck your thread brings back so many great memorieskeep up the great work. I have a few questions for you. With your "z" and the muscle car oilpan it doesn't look like you have any of the oil pan hanging below the xmember but can't tell for sure I am going to section 1.5 out of my front xmember. And move my 6.0 1" back, how much is there between the bottom of the oilpan and bottom of your xmember. Ditto for your headers?

thanks man....the headers sit just above the bottom of the frame by maybe a 1/2"-3/4"....so when its layed out it's not sitting on the headers or oil pan...keep in mind I also have 2" cut off the bottom of the frame, with a 3" "z"....the oil pan is just above the crossmember as well, prob by the same amount.....If I were doing it over again I'd get the f-body or the Holley oil pan for some addded comfort......

Re: My 86 build

Thanks for the heads up. I am on the fence between the ctsv, lh8(muscle car), and fbody pans. What stage ride tech setup did you go with?

i love the billet phantom grille!

i wonder how it would look with the headlights tinted to hide them a little. it probably wouldnt hinder the brightness much. seems ive seen people mix clear with a tad of black and spray their taillights with a couple light coats. or you can buy the black out spray tint

they might even sell them smoked.

either way nice grill!

I'm thinking about that as well. My front end on the old girl needs an overhaul, so it seems like a no brainier to go get a nice rack...trying to decide which arms to use for caster improvement as well. Let me know what you think of those strong arms
