Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Some poop came out.

Turns out the engine sucked apart the Edelbrock air filter, the metal cap inside went into the turbo, and I'm hoping didn't do too much damage....

Off to LordCo tomorrow to see if I can get a K&N that DOES NOT have a suckoffable cap inside.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Wow that could have been bad. I think you got lucky by the looks of it but I would probably still take compressor apart and clean it out and either sand the impeller or replace so no loose bits come off. I always worried about those suckoffable caps since they look to just be glued in but since thats how all the pleats are held in with the metal base air filters I try to grab the ones that are all molded silicone\rubber style material.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Chasing an increasingly noisy Hydroboost pump.

I've bled it every which way under the sun, but cannot get it to stay quiet for more than 40 minutes of driving. I ordered a new pump.

RockAuto wholesaler closeout, got the pump for $58CDN (about $40US). Two days of anger management issues and profanity, and it's in and bled, and appears to be working great.

At one point I had to turn the "Blues" off on the stereo, as the songs were just too dang "happy." Black Sabbath to the rescue.

And had a visit from a friend today:

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I seem to be losing spark, more and more - especially worse the hotter it gets / the more I drive. Definitely missfire.

I've checked plugs. I've changed wires. I'm thinking coils.

I'm curious, what spark plugs, wires and coils are you running?

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Maybe it’s a cam or crank position sensor?

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Stock 585 coils (round with heat sink), used Delco wires, after running new "Fast" brand wires. NGK TR6 plugs.

A cam or crank sensor should have a code, and will _not_ produce a STFT +15% on bank 2 only (lean misfire).

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Found two COOKED plug wires on the passenger side. I definitely need to source some LONG wires to route them around the flipped exhaust manifold rather than under them.

I went back to the "Fast" wires I had made (they were longer on the passenger side, but I pulled them thinking they were causing an issue - I'm not sure they were....). Runs MUCH better now. We'll see how long they last.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I fueled up with Chevron 94 yesterday. I tune on 91, but run 94 for a bit more safety. We have no E85 here. 94 was $2.049/L. $7.76CDN a gallon, or $5.72US a gallon.

You can see why I daily a Hyundai Accent now, eh?

This is an LQ4, pushing a brick. A brick in the shape of a parachute. A 2003 Silverado with a 6.0 is rated at 10mpg city, 11mpg highway.

I'm doing REALLY good, now that I see that.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I mean considering the extra Hp you have vs a stock silverado I'd say your winning but I'm not sure the weight difference and brickness difference lol. I have an LS swap that I had started gathering parts for years ago that I hope actually increases MPG but I dunno when I'll ever get on it again. 4.8 and 5spd into a 97 reg cab toyota tacoma in place of its 2.7L that was somehow managing 13mpg last time it ran.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I finally got around to doing a video on "decapping" injectors.

This is a process of removing a "diffuser" on the end of most LS injectors, and turns your 24lb injector into roughly a 75lb injector. ECU tuning required.

I'm running decapped injectors in my '61, and they work fine.
