Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

How are the center caps held on ......? O-rings or Plastic clips. Plastc clips are the early wheel and O-ring is the Revised wheel. The part # you listed is a 338 wheel.

Sounds like a new wheel in an old part# box

Those must be the new revision that just came out -- not even listed on the Boss site yet. Not sure why they've reverted to -1AA for the revision, unless it's because they consider the different offset a new line. That +2mm offset gets them much closer to where they should be, with about 5.6" of backspacing instead of 6.3" on the older versions with a +20mm offset. You still may need to run a 1/4" spacer, but it depends on your individual setup, rear end width, tire choice, etc. Only ways to know are to measure carefully or just bolt it up and see what happens.

For reference, these are my 20x10 specs from back in 2010: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=1#post3933454

That might be a little short on the tire for the rear ..... at least for my taste. Only gonna be 27-1/2" tall , those trucks can usually take more tire.

That wheel still has the 82.80mm bore size so you will still have to mod the front rotor more than likely , unless it is a light duty rotor front which it could be on an 82. Then they will just bolt on.

I went with 245/40-20 (27.72" tall) and 295/40-20 (29.29" tall) on my staggered 20s. I would have preferred 295/35 (28.13" tall) on the rear but it wasn't available in the tire I wanted.

This is what I would do also.
If you get on tirerack.com you can compare sizes of tires and wheel widths etc.

Must have light-duty (1") or aftermarket rotors up front.

For you guys who are posting that you installed without issues, please be sure to include what rotors you're running up front. For years now we've been battling this false impression that these are bolt-on wheels, which they still are not except in rare circumstances - namely for the relatively few trucks running light-duty or aftermarket rotors. Thanks!

Wouldnt know the difference in rotors or what to look for but the rep from Boss told me they had such a demand for this wheel on these older trucks that they re tooled the wheel. He gauranteed me they would fit and didnt ask a thing about the rotors.

Boss/AEWC has been full of crap for years and the reps will tell you whatever they think you want to hear. You can see in a post just a few above yours that the back bore, which is THE source of interference with most front rotors, hasn't changed since the wheels were first introduced. They've claimed repeatedly that they had retooled and fixed the problem, but the numbers don't lie and that bore hasn't changed by so much as a millimeter.

Yes they do fit 1" rotors with no mods. But I personally have put the rev.3 wheel ON 2 DIFFERENT TRUCKS NOW WITH 1-1/4 THICK ROTORS. One is a 68 with an 86 suburban crossmember bolted under it. (My own personal truck with what appear to be original GM Rotors) and the other is my cousins 72 swb truck.( It does have NAPA Brand relacement rotors on it.) Now I can say they will not fit my 78 2wd Blazer with 1-1/4 rotors though.

Get out your caliper and measure the diameter of the hubs on those two trucks with 1.25" rotors. Bet it's not the same as stock HD rotors. You yourself proved they haven't fixed the issue because they won't bolt on to your Blazer. Can't believe that 1300+ posts later in this thread there are still people who think the problem is solved just because they (a) got lucky with replacement/aftermarket rotors or (b) don't realize they have light-duty rotors.

Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

Never said I thought the problem was solved....... Not trying to argue about it either . Just saying there is light at the end of the tunnel. They are getting closer to making a wheel that will bolt onto these trucks.

I personally have measured the snouts on some of the rotors and there are some variations in them. If the rotor snout measures 2-1/2" accross the wheel will fit , If it is much larger than that they will not.
Again I am not trying to argue .....Just saying don't give up on them yet , they are getting closer.

My rotors on my 68 truck absolutely look 100% original GM. and the wheels fit snugly, but are not forced or tightened down to seat them, THEY FIT LIKE THEY SHOULD. THEY HAVE BEEN MEASURED .....THEY ARE 1-1/4 rotors from an 86 suburban

Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

I think what brossow is trying to say,... is that Boss/AE wheels hasn't addressed the problem since the "3AA" wheel revision that didn't even come close to addressing the problem.

brossow and I have been talking about these wheels since I started this thread in 2009.

The truth is,... the variation in 1-1/4" rotor hub dimensions, (be it aftermarket or oem),... is the only way these wheels are a true "bolt-on" with the HD rotors.

No way is Boss continuing to make improvements to the hub design issues of these wheels.
The only improvement is a 20x10 wheel with a 5.5" BS.

And even then, all they did was add more meat to the back side mounting surface; they didn't even do it the right way by leaving the center section alone and just moving it an inch more inboard. Effectively they just added a permanent spacer to their own wheel. I love the look of the wheel, and I love that it's made in USA, but AEWC/Boss is incompetent when it comes to making meaningful, appropriate changes to their own designs and offerings.
