Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Update:
So I started on the bed wood. Step 1 I used 3/8" plywood as a backer for the 1x6 planks I'll be using (No not using a kit or strips) The box in the back will house my battery, tools spares etc. The center of the bed will lift out to gain access to the tank /fuel system. The backer board will have 1x1 tube frame under it for support. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Very similar to my setup Mark. I used 1.5" square tubing for the framework, however, and don't have the plywood underneath. The toolbox I have covering my battery is one of my favorite details!
What are your plans for a finish on the planks? Stain, tung oil, poly?

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Funny you should ask.
The technique I'll be using is an ancient Japanese wood burning called (shou Sugi ban) It gets burned then wire brushed and finally oiled. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
this build is Superb, the creativity (steering wheel), the craftsmanship, and so many good ideas (fuel tank, core support, etc.)
I was wondering if you could help me out and maybe share some more pics of how your radiator frame that you built in threads (765, 774, 783, 789, an 842 which go into great detail on the top portion) [yes I have studied your thread, ha ha] connects to the core support bracket you ran between the second gen Camaro subframe I have a '54 so the grille is obviously different but it would really help me out to see how the radiator frame mates with that bottom support crossmember don't mean to hijack your threat, honest, please and thank you |

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
You call it "(shou Sugi ban)"
In Alabama we call it "( I burnt that there wood with ma blowtorch, and then I took that there wire brush to it , and scrubbed them suckers good, and then oiled the crap outta them there boards till it looked like what I wanted)"... Either way the results are great..haha

Yes, that works well. Mine was torched and had multiple coats of Tung oil applied.

So here are the last few shots of the wood.
As I stated earlier the center section is removable to gain access to the tank for maintenance. Mark

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
I have just spent the last 3 days reading your thread (all 54 pages) and I have seen the last 5 years of devotion to a distant dream. I used to kinda think I had a pretty good bead on these trucks. But after reading your thread I feel like I’ve been playing with Mega blocks! Each page gets more and more incredible, and through it all your craftsmanship and attention to detail are superb! All this time I never put 2 and 2 together, and realized that Jim was your dad. When this lockdown thing is over, I'd like to come down and visit you both and of course have a gander at this beautiful piece of machinery!

[FONT="Comic Sans MS"]Again Thank you very much, very kind of you to say.
The Idea from day 1 was to try and do things differently than everyone else. The dash was a major piece I wanted to stand out from the usual dash in these trucks. Mark/FONT]

I’ve been looking at build threads for a couple years now n you mark are an inspiration for sure. I can’t believe I just finally came across this build! Only took me a week to get through. So many good ideas... I feel I should of been taking notes. I can’t wait to see it done!

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D
Couple things to show today.
1st. I had to cut and modify my lower radiator end so it will be easier to make the hose fit. The other thing is my new Battery terminal ends They are a solid machined pieced and are real nice quality. The battery cable ends are available in 3 different sizes upto 1A cable size. These are from Knuconcepts. Mark
