Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I feel your pain on that engine. I had a similar situation, I bought a TBI 350 from a local high school shop teacher. Didn't like the look of it after tearing it down so I sent it to an engine rebuilder to have the lower end rebuilt. Put a new set of GM Performance Vortec heads on it and ended up with this:
After I installed it, I kept having a problem with the starter coming loose. Come to find, the block was cracked right down one of the starter mounting holes. I was not a happy camper.

Man, sorry to see all that mess. It's a really good thing you tore into it though!

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
My son got the sticky piston pin fixed yesterday. And brought home a ring groove cleaned, so we got that chore done. Today he got new rod bolts for 2 of the rods. The pistons are soaking in the parts washer. We'll clean them up soon and get the rings re-installed. His shop hasn't used a drill mounted honer in many years and they couldn't find it. So I'll either have to ask around some other guys I'm pretty sure have one or pull the crank out and have the machine hone it. Costs more, but oh well, it needs to be done. No rush since the heads won't be ready for awhile (dropping them off tomorrow night).
And I ordered another dozen windows I'll need to get installed in the house. That'll eat up a few days worth of shop time. Found this old CB in the rafters of the 1 car garage...

I think you can rent a dingle ball hone at one of the big parts houses.

The block is cleaned up and back in the garage but I'm on the road and have to wait for some new parts to show up. I ordered some bearings, new harmonic balancer, intake bolts, plastigage, a push rod length checker. And about 5 minutes after I submitted my order I remembered I wanted to get a windage tray. Since I'm also working on a LS motor swap on my 79 and figuring out the accessories on that, and seeing my leaking power steering pump on the 71, I'm thinking about upgrading my accessories on the 71 also. Should do the serp belt set up if I can find one in the junkyard. I should only have to swap pulleys on the alternator, new PS pump, but I'm not sure if my water pump will work or not. Oh well, I have time to research it.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Yesterday I put the down payment on my dream car.
http://www.factoryfive.com/kits/mk4-roadster/ Last Friday I got an email from Factory Five that they were going to have a sale. 10 car kits marked down to their 1995 price of $9990. About a $3000 discount. I got the 9th one of those 10. I earned a bonus at work that I received Friday. I did my taxes on Sunday and even though I'm not getting a refund, I'm not having to pay in nearly what I was expecting. I had money set aside for that. I'm not well off, but I make decent money. I've scrounged and saved and did as much work as I'm capable of myself on home improvements, car repairs, etc. to save money. I can talk myself into just about anything I want to and justify it to myself in many ways. I have a lot of projects to finish before I get started on that one, but I wanted to share my good news with a group of people that will totally understand and appreciate how significant of an event this is for me.

Hey, that is totally awesome! Congrats! That is a dream car for me as well. Will this one be any longer in the passenger compartment area? I have had serious thoughts of selling a thing or 2 to get one. Maybe later on.

From what I've read the factory five cars have an extended footwell. I'm not really tall at 5-11 or so. I could put a race type steering wheel (quick release) to ease exit/entry.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
No, I know a couple of the companies building these offer the bodies stretched in the passenger compartment area to accommodate for more leg room. I haven't researched for sure who does them because then I'd be itching worse to build one.

I wish I had an update on the motor but I've been taking advantage of the mild weather to work on my house. The contractor is finally on site working on the roof. I finished installing the last of 22 windows and resheeting the family room addition on the back of the house. The old siding is off and it's ready for house wrap and taping the seams. I'll probably get the short block together this weekend.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Got the crank back in the block and checked the ring gaps. Should be ok. I cleaned the pistons up, got most of the carbon scraped off. Should be able to get the short block back together soon. Then it will sit until the heads are back.

Great to see things are working out and I like you new project. Hope that you plan on having a thread in alternate tinkerings to document the build. I would enjoy following along.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I got the rotating assembly back together. No new issues there.
The heads were checked for cracks. One looks good. The other "might" have a crack by one of the exhaust seats. If so it should be repairable at a good machine shop.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
The good news is the heads don't have any cracks. So Mike is going forward with my head rebuild.
As I mentioned, I was looking at switching to a serpentine belt set up. I think I already have almost everything I need on hand to do it. I got a parts suburban from my cousin last year. It was a 1990 with a 350. Some of the stuff on the passenger side of the engine was missing, but it looks like the stuff I really need was there. I only have an alternator and power steering, so I don't need the AC stuff. I just need a water pump pulley which I saw at the junkyard the other day.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
My heads should be ready soon. I might have them by next weekend. So I spent a little time cleaning the engine and getting some paint on it.
Making the small block great again... I also got the oil pump installed. Found another problem there from the kids that put this thing together. The oil pump pick up tube wasn't even tight into the pump. It wasn't pushed in all the way so it probably would have just fallen out of the pump later on. I took the measurements to get it in the right position, about 3/8" off the bottom of the pan and used a punch to get it into the pump. Usually that's all I ever do but this time I decided to put a tack weld on there to make sure it stays where it's supposed to. The serpentine belt set up I'll be using. Just needs cleaned up and painted. And I need the correct (reverse rotation) water pump.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Mike got my heads finished up last week and was even able to bring them down to me. A 3 hour drive, much appreciated.
We wiped them down and sprayed them with some aluminum silver engine paint. I have an awesome set of faux-luminum vortec heads. I think the paint makes them about 50 lbs lighter. I still need to pick up a few things to finish it up but it'll be ready to swap in fairly soon. Unfortunately it'll have to wait until I have the time. Hopefully before the end of April.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Been out of town most of the past couple weeks so not a lot done. I did pick up a few parts the other day so I could get the intake manifold installed and the valve covers were delivered...
I also got a water pump, AC delete pulley and a new tensioner. I think I just need a new idler pulley and some bolts and the serpentine belt set up is ready to bolt on. I should get a new PS pump to replace my leaky one. I've pretty much decided to upgrade the EFI to the new FI Tech unit. I'll need to swap the dizzy and oil filter adapter from my 283. Not much left outside of these things before I can make the swap. Looking forward to that.
