Re: My 52 GMC Build
Well after 60+ years of these trucks being around, I would hope something gets easier. It was really that easy on my Jeep 1967 (same headlights as these trucks) took me 1/2 hour.

That would be awesome Henry. Your '51 bagged will be cool. If you don't make it we are planing on going back to Charlotte again in October.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
Bit of an update on the new bed. I went and priced out old barn board This stuff is like gold, it would cost about $300 for enough wood to cover the bed. There are very few places that sell this stuff and I'm not even sure if it will totaly mach my truck. So I had an idea, the last 2 pictures are just trial and they will get a gray stain.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
when I took apart the grain truck I sold some of the floor boards and side panels. the guy who took the floor was building a coffee table. I still have some, the tongue and groove sides with the grain sluice. it still has the 40s style square head hardware on it.
that looks like a great idea, using current to burn the wood. do you have to get it wet or is there still enough moisture in the dry wood?

Re: My 52 GMC Build
Yes sir, barn wood is crazy expensive. You can use a torch, burn it lightly, then sand it, and stain it with gray or what ever color stain you want to get your tones. It's a lot cheaper and you can make it look really old really fast.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
A wire wheel on a grinder to remove the soft wood and expose grain works well. Viniger/water mixed turns cedar grey. Don't know what it does to other types of wood. But I've made a few "barn wood" picture frames. Of course , nothing beats the real deal.

I find that stuff for free around my area. Mind you the boards are not that nice and straight. That's pretty crazy what people charge for that.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
its sad to see hillbililes burning a whole barn over some beer! no offense to them but yeah they are just burning up alot of money. Lots of old barns around me, so its practically free if you haul it. Have you thought about pallet wood? I entertained that thought. I like the different shades and thin boards, kinda like a hardwood floor look. and.... it would be free!

Re: My 52 GMC Build
So tonight my son and I tried a full bed length burn on 2" wide, had to do it in 2' sections but worked out quite well. This weekend I will go get 6" wide and try again then put on a gray stain and see what the boards will look like.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
neato! that burnt wood is going to be super out of the box, just like most other parts of your truck
I tried to remember where the old grain truck sides were in my stuff and saw them laying across the escape window box on the new addition haha. I didnt want the dogs to fall in before they were used to the egress.

I hope so!! It will be better than the plywood, and if I don't like it as well as I hope then I'll change it for next year.

We have had no snow for a few weeks now and the salt is off the road. You will have that soon.
