Re: 72 k20 project
Most big truck parts supply houses carry 5" and larger. Local sourcing of 4" was always more difficult. To small for semis and the likes.

Re: 72 k20 project
Racepartsolutions is another good source for flanges for 4" AND 5" pipes and turbo parts.

Ryan not trying to rain on your parade but aren't you concerned about the lag time you exhaust brake will have being that far away for the motor?

Re: 72 k20 project
nope. Pressure is pressure. There is a slightly increased volume to fill, but considering an engine displacing nearly six liters per 2 revolutions it won't take enough time to notice the volume, especially at higher engine speed. It's a pretty common place for these big ones in pick ups. And more importantly, it won't matter, since this is the first place it will reasonably fit. even if there was a notable difference, it will be considerably better than not running one.

Re: 72 k20 project
Every medium duty truck I've ever worked on that had one was a minimum of 24-36" from the engine. They all worked fine. And like Ryan said, there will be pressure built up. It's like jamming half a potato in there side ways.

One more thing. My exhaust brake is mounted back like this also. Its probably 4' back once the down pipe is accounted for and that was as close as I could get it. It works perfectly fine however it does take a second longer to start slowing the truck down over a turbo mount. In actuality it is probably better for the turbo as it gets a little more time to spin down. As said it takes a little longer to fill the pipe volume up but it is not bad at all. Its like adding a larger intercooler. |

Re: 72 k20 project
I have that parts everywhere thing too. bigger shop area and some storage will be on my dream list when we decide to get out of the crackerbox row. just enough space to build would be nice. id like to pick my own set up, but anything more spacious will be welcome!
i hacked away at this some. 5" donut the pair of pants flanged on from the outside |

Re: 72 k20 project
Your build is looking nice Ryan. Back on page 52 you mention trailer safety chains. On a flatbed I built a while back, I welded some grade 8 nuts to supports under the deck and the owner bought several forged eye bolts. I welded 7 of them around the exterior of the deck plus the 2 next to his drop ball. That way he had tiedowns everywhere, but still had a flat deck for sheet goods. When he tows his trailer he puts in the center 2 for chain hook points.

this needed to be addressed. i drew up a simple solution to a pesky thing. for the fuel feed, return, brake line and electric harness. i still have the brake line to the rear to make up. Last edited by ryanroo; 05-25-2015 at 09:53 AM. Reason: department of redundancy department |

Re: 72 k20 project
I found 3/4" forged eye bolts at a local farm and garden store. That size has a working load of around 5000 lbs.
Did you make those hard line holders? Those are sweet. I made some cruder versions of those for my Nova. |

Re: 72 k20 project
thanks! i did make them. they are jetted from 1/2" 6061 and then cross drilled for the mounting screws. we were having software issues with the pathing program for a while and i was about to mill them from bar stock. i'm glad the jet came back. much less time involved there

Re: 72 k20 project
I'm betting if you made a bunch of the 2 piece blanks you could sell a ton of them. I miss having access to a waterjet.

Re: 72 k20 project
Have any plans on putting any isolators in there to keep the lines from chattering or anything? Nice work, I really like that type of holder.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe make the holes a tad bigger for a piece of hose.

no plans. no need. the tube is seamless drawn SS control tube. pretty much like really small DOM only more critically manufactured. the parts are jetted and the head is dynamic so the cut is square. its pretty spot on with the tolerance to the small. after you clamp them down over the hard lines you have to manually separate them. there is no movement and no need for isolation. you could do pull ups off these... haha i will have an actual loom for the wiring and if i need to i will wrap the loom with material to give a snug fit in the clamp. |
