Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

After numerous delays, I finally got around to the bleeding....brakes that is..
The 1 man brake bleeder works pretty decent...id give it a B+...a few things I figured out by trial and error is fill the bladder full before you start..I didnt and about half way thru I had to start over...the other thing is the catch can that hooks on the bleeder screw isn't vented..found that out after I blew the lid off..so I just left the lid off..
A buddy at the dealership said this unit is similar to what they use but on a smaller scale...
I started with a completely dry system..didt bench bleed the master cylinder either.
I did gravity bleed the whole system before I started just so I'd have some fluid in there before I pressured it up..that's how I found the leaks I had..theve all stopped now..
I've got full engagement at half pedal..so I'll have to wait and see what it's like once the hydroboost is in play..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Another thing I been waiting on is some extra interior lighting...after I got the orig dome light working, even with the led bulb, it had less than useful results..would barely light up the cab..guess I'm to used to my GMC with all its lights..so I ordered a set of 4 led lights ..they were advertised as interior or tag lights..I was hoping I could get by with just using 2 of them, but after a light test, I'll need all 4..I'll mount 1 on each kick panel, and the other 2 on each side of the glove box...all aimed towards the firewall..
They'll be wired in to the dome light and the eventual door switches

Come on up to my house. I will put you up in my spare room and any "reject" work you perform on my truck will be 10x anything I will probably achieve.

Continues to look good.

Ha..67c...I've had so many rejects I could have built 2 or 3 more trucks from them...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I knew something had to go wrong.....it did....
I started wet sanding the doors...about half way thru painting the other night I noticed the paint nibs show up..well when I started wet sanding, the nibs rolled out, leaving me some primer spots to look at..
So here we go again..I only sanded one door, and it was the worst of the 2 as far as nibs go...but I'll fully sand them to see what I got...then repaint...sighhhhh..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

yeah,...my "lucky" streak continues..
it may not be as bad as I thought at 1st... Lorne pointed out it may be sanding residue in some little divots...turns out it was in some of them..theres still one I cant get out

Little dab of paint to fill the hole, wet sand, and buff?

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I got my new moisture trap setup finished...heres a pic of the old setup.(after I took it apart)..and the new setup..I used all new pipe and fittings as aell...when I looked inside the old pipes, they were oxidized inside..
I also mixed up some paint to try to fill in the divots..my paint mixes 8:4:1...so i took a toothpick and dipped in the red ,and put 8 drops on the board, then another toothpick in the hardner and added 1 drop of it...then i mixed it up....a new toothpick worked pretty good for dabbing paint..now my door looks like it has the measals..I tried to get a pic of it but it doesnt show up to good..
I'll let it dry good and then see if itll wet sand and blend in..if not , there will be a repaint acoming...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well....a little dabll do ya...just like the old brylcream commercial....
I'm gonna call this a success...I did the paint dabs in a bunch of spots on the worst of the 2 doors..let it dry a couple days..got out there tonite and started on the spots with 600g wrapped around a paint stick..
I sanded in a X pattern across them ...I know where most were and for the life of me , I cant see them now ..i had the LEDs shining across the door so i could tell when they were gone..after I got them all I went over the whole door panel with 600g to give it a consistent finish..I'll go back with 1500 and 2000g then buff ..I think its gonna be fine...
So I've now learned a new trick on how to fix blemishes...

And a big thanks to all for the advice and tips...

I tried getting some before and after pics but they just wouldnt show them well..
I'll add some pics after I buff ...hopefully get that done this weekend ..
On my way back out to do touchups on the other door..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

been working nights for the last week, so Ive only had a few minutes a day to work on doors...
been filling in the fish eyeballs that happened when I painted the doors...
I sanded them smooth with 600g, then 1500g, then 2000g...today I had a few minutes to buff 1 of the doors...
im satisfied ….cant even tell that there were about 40-50 spots of paint fixes on the door..
the other door wasn't as bad so it should turn out ok as well..i hope..
it was overcast when I took the pic so it doesn't show reflection as well
